Every word Jensen spoke cut him open like a knife, carving deeper and deeper.

Back then, even he had believed Natalic traded her body to secure Witch Doctor’s help. That shameful thought had festered in his chest, so he never dared ask her outright. If he himself harbored that suspicion, how could others not?
Now, remembering her exhaustion, her loneliness, her silent suffering–he wanted to tear himself apart.
A hot, metallic rush surged in his chest. He tried to hold it back, but couldn’t. With a choked sound, blood spilled from his lips. His body wavered on the edge of collapse.
“Jensen!”
Loretta rushed forward, steadying him, heart clenching at the sight.
“Have you confirmed it with Natalie? Did you have her checked?”
He shook his head.
“Mother, why do you think I took that knife for her? Because I owed Natalie my life. And even after that, the Stone family brought Witch Doctor to save me. That means I still owe her one. For five years I believed Sharon’s lies, neglected Natalie until she nearly burned to death in that fire. One mistake after another–how can I ever repay her?”
His eyes burned crimson, raw with grief.
What he could not admit was that he still loved Natalie–loved her more fiercely with every truth uncovered. And yet, he had driven her away.
“Mother, I lost her. What if she never forgives me? What do I do? Without her, I’ll die. I truly will.”
His ragged breaths came faster, almost strangling him. Panic swept through Loretta.
“Jensen! Don’t frighten me like this! None of this is your fault–it was Sharon’s lies, that vile woman! Listen, Natalie must still have feelings for you. Repent sincerely, show her your heart. Can five years of love really be erased by half a year with that useless husband of hers?”
Her words checked his despair, lit a spark in his eyes.
“You’re right. Natalie and I were together for five years. She risked her life for me. I don’t

believe she could stop loving me in just half a year. If I show true remorse, she’ll forgive me, won’t she? And I heard in half a month the Stone family will hold her recognition banquet. If I can win her forgiveness before she fully returns to them, we can still be together.”
He clutched Loretta’s hand tightly, gaze desperate, searching.
Seeing him like this twisted her heart. If she’d known earlier how much he valued Natalie, she would never have let him register with Sharon. But it was too late for regrets.
Outside, the city seethed with unrest. Loretta pressed her palm firmly over his hand.
“You’re right. As long as Natalie lives, there’s hope. And right now, there’s an opportunity before you.”
Jensen frowned. Something in her tone pricked him.
“What do you mean, as long as she lives? What’s happened to Natalie?”
His sharpness made her sigh.
“Natalie’s in trouble.”
His body jolted. “What? What happened?”
He grasped at fading memories—Natalie leaving with the police for a statement. How could that end in danger?
“And Baron? That man’s alive and breathing? He let Natalie fall into danger? Useless bastard!”
Blind fury channeled into blame, Jensen spat the words.
“He’s never been worthy of her! A parasite living off her light–what else is he good for?”
Jealousy gnawed at him, the thought of Natalie by Baron’s side making his vision red.
Natalie was his. Only his.
Five years ago she had risked her life for him, given him her rib. Their fates were bound together by blood and bone.
His voice dropped to a growl. “Mother, tell me clearly. What happened to her?”
Loretta repeated the scraps she’d heard.
“I don’t know all the details. I only know she went to the station to give her statement–and

disappeared there. Some say she was kidnapped by an unknown faction. Some say the police. themselves took her. No one knows for sure. But the underworld and the upper circles alike are hunting for her. Ocean City is in chaos. The underworld even issued a bounty: whoever finds Natalie can name their price.”
