Chapter 510: The Exchange of Children
After Xenon left, no one knew exactly what transpired, but when he returned that evening, his gaze fell upon his sleeping daughter, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. The quiet room was heavy with tension, the faint sound of rain tapping against the windowpane adding to the somber atmosphere.
Xenon’s eyes quickly scanned the room, and before long, he uncovered several hidden listening devices and surveillance gadgets cleverly concealed in corners and behind furniture. Without hesitation, he smashed them all into pieces, the sound of breaking glass echoing softly.
His wife stirred awake, her sleep disturbed by the noise. Rubbing her eyes, she saw Xenon destroying the equipment and immediately sat up, concern etched deeply on her face. “Xenon, what’s going on?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Xenon pulled her close, his voice barely above a whisper as he choked out the truth. “That bastard wants me to kill my elder brother. How could I ever do that?”
Her eyes widened in shock, disbelief washing over her. “What? That’s… impossible.”
He released her gently but kept his expression grave. “He won’t let my brother go. I can feel the hatred he harbors—it runs deep. If this child swap is connected to him, then all of us are in danger. Jane has been watching me constantly, and I haven’t had a chance to warn anyone. He’s given me only two days. If I don’t comply, he’ll come after you and our daughter.”
Tears welled up in his wife’s eyes, her heart pounding with fear. “I’m ready to stand by you, no matter what happens. But our baby… she’s just a month old. She doesn’t understand anything. We can’t just…”
“I know,” Xenon interrupted softly, his voice thick with pain. “I can’t bear the thought of harm coming to her either. That’s why I’m planning to switch our daughter again.”
His wife froze, confusion and dread swirling in her mind. “Switch? What do you mean?”
Xenon took a deep breath and explained. “A relative from a distant branch of your uncle’s family recently had a baby girl, but she died at birth. I arranged to take custody of the child’s body. Someone is waiting outside right now. I have to exchange our daughter with that baby.”
Panic flashed across his wife’s face. “No! Where will you send my daughter? I can’t let her go!”
Xenon’s voice was steady but urgent. “Wherever she goes, it will be safer than here, inside the Stone family. I know it hurts, and I feel the same pain. But time is running out. I destroyed the surveillance here, and Jane will be back soon. We have to do this now.”
He gently lifted little Yvonne into his arms.
His wife clung to her daughter, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Isn’t there any other way? Please, there must be another option.”
