“That’s right! I’m a bastard! I personally gave my son leukemia, refused to get him treated, starved him, and even abused him! But everything I did… was to let him live!” James’s voice trembled with a mix of anguish and defiance, each word dripping with a pain that clawed at the very fabric of his soul.
“Bullshit!” Shauna’s eyes blazed with fury, her cheeks flushed as she spat the words out like venom. “James, if you’re not human, just say so. After doing all that, you still have the nerve to say it was to let him live? Have some shame!” Her heart raced, the betrayal she felt coursing through her veins like fire.
James’s agitation was palpable. His bloodshot eyes glimmered with a wild intensity, and he resembled a cornered beast, desperate for escape yet trapped in an invisible cage. With a roar that echoed through the room, his voice cracked under the weight of his torment, “It’s true! Whether you believe me or not, I only let my son get leukemia so he could live properly!” The desperation in his tone was almost unbearable, as if he were fighting against a tide of despair.
“What exactly is going on?” Baron interjected, his brow furrowing as he observed James’s raw emotions. There was something in his demeanor that suggested this was no mere act; the anguish was too real, too profound.
Taking a deep, shaky breath, James began to unravel the truth. “I told you, the boss is doing research, something related to blood. I don’t understand all the details, but I was overjoyed when my son first returned to me. However, when the boss summoned me to bring my son to him a month later, a chilling sense of foreboding washed over me.” His voice lowered, revealing the weight of his secret.
Baron’s expression darkened at the mention of blood research, and Shauna’s disbelief morphed into a dawning realization as she stared at James, her mind racing to comprehend the implications.
James pressed on, “At that moment, I thought the boss valued me, and it filled me with a sense of pride. But a woman who was assigned to me whispered that it might not be a good thing. I knew she was loyal to the boss, so I kept my guard up. I had my trusted men investigate, and what they uncovered was chilling. Several other men like me… after their children met the boss, they were all kept by his side.”
“The boss claimed he adored these children and wanted to spend money to raise them. Initially, their parents were ecstatic, believing their children had earned the boss’s favor and would secure a bright future. But I stumbled upon something that shattered that illusion! It was all a facade, a cruel trick orchestrated by the boss to manipulate us!”
“What was it?” Shauna asked instinctively, her voice barely above a whisper, as if afraid of the answer.
Baron, however, spoke with a cold certainty. “Those children… are probably all dead.” His words hung in the air like a heavy fog, suffocating the hope that lingered.
