"You agreed way too fast! Were you just waiting for this day to come?" Celeste snapped, her voice laced with venom. "You think Mom and Dad came to you because they regret kicking you out? Keep dreaming."
She turned and stormed off.
Richard personally came to pick them up. Zachary was already in the car. When he saw Serena walking over with Celeste, his eyes lit up slightly. He instinctively shifted over to make room.
But the moment Serena got in, Zachary’s face turned cold and proud again, like he was waiting for her to coax him.
Celeste slid into the front passenger seat. Serena sat in the back. Despite Zachary making room, she didn’t move any closer.
He immediately grew dissatisfied. "Serena, aren’t you even going to say hi?"
Typical country bumpkin—no manners!
“Zachary, don’t talk to Serena like that,” Richard said.
Zachary was stunned. Dad… defending Serena? That was new.
Through the rearview mirror, Richard looked at Serena and asked with a smile, “What would you like to eat? Your mom’s already at the hotel. If we pick something now, the food’ll be ready when we arrive.”
Serena replied coolly, “I was your daughter for two months, and you still don’t know what I like?”
Her new mom at the Morrow family had figured it out in just two days.
Richard’s face stiffened, his smile vanishing. Since his wild daughter didn’t care about saving face for him, there was no reason for him to keep putting on a warm front. He started the car and headed straight to Silver Seasons Hotel.
Thanos was coming out with a basketball when he saw Serena getting into the Reed family's car.
Wesley nudged him. “Hey, isn’t that Serena? Why’s she getting in with the Reed family?”
Thanos’s face darkened instantly.
Serena had been saying she was staying late to study—but was she really just sneaking around with the Reed family?
That two-timing girl, he thought. Playing both sides, having her cake and eating it too. He was definitely telling Mom and Dad.
…
At Silver Seasons Hotel, in a VIP event room—
Zachariah had been waiting half an hour and was already losing patience. “Mom, are they coming or not? If they’re not, I’m leaving!”
Zachariah rolled his eyes. Advanced Research Team? Big deal. Probably just a bunch of nerds with thick glasses, bad fashion sense, and zero social skills. He wasn’t impressed.
A country bumpkin even her own parents don’t like? How good could she be? Trying to pawn off that girl on my son? Keep dreaming.
Madam Suzanne blinked in surprise. “Wasn’t she raised in an orphanage?”
Angela gave a tactful smile. “Must be good genes.”
Madam Suzanne was speechless. Seriously, woman? Must you brag like that?
But then she thought about her own son—how many top-tier tutors they’d hired, and yet his grades in Zerinda were still at the bottom of the pack. If it weren’t for preserving the family bloodline, she wouldn’t have even considered the Reed family for a marriage alliance.
An orphan who could place first… that was clearly more impressive than her son, who’d had every advantage and still couldn’t make it to the top. Maybe Serena wasn’t so bad after all.
Zachariah wasn’t having it. “Mom, don’t let the Reed family fool you. That country bumpkin’s gotta be dark, skinny, ugly, tasteless, and completely unrefined. She’d only embarrass the Simpson family in public.”
Madam Suzanne faltered. He had a point.
Angela, hearing Serena get insulted, didn’t feel sad at all—in fact, she kind of enjoyed it. But outwardly, she still had to defend her. “She might be from the countryside, but she’s… not that bad.”
Zachariah snorted.
Madam Suzanne didn’t press the issue. They hadn’t even seen Serena yet—no point arguing. She’d judge with her own eyes when the time came.
