Serena looked up and saw it was him. Her porcelain-white face remained calm and impassive. "You're bothering me."
Taylor was speechless. Bothering you? What—by interrupting your little mobile game?
Why was he wasting something so important on someone like her?
He walked right past her, pulling out his phone again—and that’s when he saw the message he’d just sent.
The mood dropped another few degrees, like Serena's words had somehow tainted his conversation with Dr. G.
Celeste arrived just in time to see the two of them speaking face-to-face.
She couldn’t make out their expressions or hear what was being said. But one thing was clear—Serena had no business showing up here right now. And to run into Taylor like this? Way too coincidental.
A wave of uncertainty swept over Celeste, and she didn’t dare approach.
When Taylor walked out of the school nurse’s office, he looked positively radiant. That only made Celeste more anxious.
She pushed down her rising disappointment and forced a sweet, harmless smile. "Taylor, something good happen?"
Taylor finally looked up. "Celeste, I’m really busy today. I don’t have time to walk you home. Be careful on your way."
Then he gently patted the top of her head and walked away.
Celeste was stunned. His voice, his manner—it was the same gentle tone he always used. But he hadn’t even looked her in the eyes.
Zachary had already fallen for Serena. Celeste couldn’t let Taylor fall for her too.
When she got home, both Richard and Angela were there.
The Reed family’s business had been on a steep decline lately. Richard had been spending most of his days at home, smoking to vent his frustrations. The whole house was clouded in cigarette smoke.
Angela didn’t even dare hire a maid anymore, doing all the housework herself. It had worn her down, both in spirit and appearance—her temper had worsened, too.
As soon as Celeste walked through the door, the stench of smoke hit her like a wall. She instinctively turned to escape upstairs and catch her breath.
“Celeste!” Richard called out.
She had no choice but to retract her step on the staircase. "Dad, what is it?"
Richard gestured to the couch. Celeste walked over and sat down.
Of course they’d go straight for the one thing I don’t want to talk about.
Of course Richard and Angela weren’t.
Celeste continued, “The Reed family has more than one daughter. Or have you forgotten?”
Richard hadn’t. “But Serena… her personality just doesn’t win people over.”
“Don’t worry,” Celeste said. “As the daughter of the Reed family, I won’t shy away from my responsibilities. Set up a meeting. I’ll go with Serena. If Zachariah chooses me, I’ll accept it—no complaints.”
Richard and Angela were deeply comforted. It felt good to have such a mature, understanding daughter.
The next afternoon after school, Celeste requested time off from Taylor, then tracked down Serena, who was about to head to the school nurse’s office.
“Serena, Mom and Dad want to take you out for dinner,” Celeste said with a smile—an attractive one, even.
But when someone is plotting against you, the stench of it is unmistakable.
When people want to trap you, there’s no point dodging. Serena went straight toward it.
She turned. “Okay.”
