The video call connected, but the camera on the other end remained off…
Taylor’s disappointment was obvious, so much so that when Serena first saw him on screen, she was a little confused.
"What’s wrong?"
She didn’t even bother to speak, just typed.
Taylor replied, "Nothing."
His main research was on surgical robotic arms—remotely controlled devices where the margin of error had to be infinitesimal. To reach that level of precision required the very highest grade of components and operating systems.
What he showed this time was a qualitative leap from the last time he’d demonstrated to Sean. But in fine manipulation, Serena still felt that thousandths of an inch were too rough—especially for surgery, where lives hung in the balance.
Serena sat in the back row. The back row had two guardians of its own—herself and Indigo. As long as they were there, no one else dared stir trouble on that turf.
She wore headphones, scrolling on her phone. Rowan, seated beside her, wisely left her alone.
Just then Indigo walked past behind her. He hadn’t meant to snoop, but his eyes landed on her screen for a second. He thought he recognized the man she was talking to.
Back in his seat, he couldn’t resist glancing her way again. The memory of his phone being hacked flared up—he was sure Serena had hacker skills. The conclusion came fast: Serena was spying on Taylor.
Well, who would’ve guessed? The little girl had a second face.
Maybe his staring was too blatant, because Serena turned and caught him. Indigo quickly looked away, pulling out a book as if to study.
On the video, Taylor suddenly turned toward the camera and spoke earnestly. "Dr. Q, on the day I join Horizon Research Institute, can I present this robotic arm to you in person?"
Serena was caught off guard.
His attitude was so reverent she almost felt a trace of guilt for stringing him along.
"Why?" she typed back.
His eyes shone with determination as he read the words.
"Because you were the one who set me on this path. I might not yet reach your height, but I want to dedicate this robotic arm to you as a tribute."
Serena thought it over. In intelligent machinery, her own proudest creation was only a companion-type robot—capable of remote operation over thousands of miles, mimicking a person’s voice and habits, adapting intelligently. Too costly, only a few units had ever been made, mostly for rich eccentrics to watch their children.
A gift offered on its own, she wouldn’t refuse. She nodded with satisfaction. "Actually, cash works too."
Maybe that shameless remark was too much for him. Suddenly—thud!
