The textbook had been written for her back when she was at 1314 Lab, personally compiled by someone she now hated. But as much as she resented him, she never doubted his academic precision.
“Read it properly. This book will do you good.”
Sebastian nodded in silence. By the time I finish this monstrosity, I might just end up with degrees in robotics, AI, psychology, and neuroscience.
Zachary lingered at the edge of the Almara estate, too afraid to approach the main villa—he was scared of dogs.
He waited by the roadside for a long time before Serena finally appeared. As soon as he saw her, he stepped into the street, determined not to let her brush past him again.
With both hands in his pockets, he stood dead center like he didn’t care, but his eyes said otherwise.
Serena squinted slightly against the light. Her lashes cast shadows below her eyes, making her expression unreadable.
When she got closer, Zachary said, “Did you know Taylor’s giving his robotic arm patent to my sister?”
Serena blinked. “So… you’re here to brag?”
“I’m here to warn you.”
His voice sharpened with frustration. “If you don’t start stepping up, you’re going to fall so far behind you’ll never catch up. What are you going to use to compete with my sister?”
Serena frowned slightly. “Why would I need to compete with her?”
That made him even angrier. “You’ve got the Reed family’s blood. You can’t lose.”
If you don’t win, how will Mom and Dad ever recognize you? How are you supposed to go back to the Reed family?
Zachary looked at her like a general trying to command a soldier who didn’t care about the war. He was thinking long-term. She just wanted to go home.
While he burned with indignation, Serena casually unwrapped a piece of candy and popped it in her mouth.
“I don’t go by Reed.”
One sentence. Clean kill.
Zachary turned and stormed back into the Almara estate. Celeste looked up from her phone. “She’s gone?”
Zachary grunted, which counted as a yes.
Celeste immediately sent a message.
Outside the neighborhood, Serena raised her hand to hail a cab, but pulled it back down.
She kept walking.
Hayes Villa wasn’t far from the Morrow estate—just a few miles. She used to run farther than that with a weighted vest.
About ten minutes later, she reached a quiet intersection. The car that had been trailing her finally pulled up.
Four men stepped out, blocking her path.
Zachariah leaned against the door and smiled. “Serena. We meet again.”

Zachariah raised a brow. Didn’t expect that. She’s learning.
What’s she need a burner for? Couldn’t resist my charm after all, huh?
Won’t acknowledge me in public, but already messaging me in private? Guess that guy from yesterday couldn’t satisfy her.
So she’s one of those flirty little teases.
