Chapter 29 A Performance to Remember
Sidney froze. That country bumpkin who supposedly couldn’t play any instrument had never come to me for help. So this was what she had been waiting for. Fine, I’ll let you go on stage! But ruining Tami’s “The Light? That was something I could never tolerate.
Celeste added, “She might not even be able to play it. Don’t worry.”
After all, she had lived under the same roof with Serena for two months. Forget instruments, she didn’t even listen to music.
Tami’s “The Light” was famous and incredibly difficult. It was classified as the hardest piece in violin exams.
Even the piano adaptation had taken Celeste ages to learn smoothly.
Serena playing it on a trumpet? She didn’t believe it for a second.
Without a doubt, Serena stepping on stage would be a complete embarrassment.
“Serena is going to butcher my idol’s “The Light“? I’m going to kill her!”
Sidney wasn’t the only one furious.
Tami was a legend in the music world, a mysterious figure who had barely appeared in public, yet his music had captivated countless fans. Many young people idolized him.
By choosing this piece, Serena wasn’t just angering Sidney–she was offending all of Tami’s fans.
This was a full–scale provocation.
In the audience, Thanos, wearing a pair of bunny ears, looked utterly dark–faced.
“Mom, if a fight breaks out later, take Serena and run.”
“What about you?”
“I’m leaving right now, don’t stop me!”
Olivia fell silent.
Morgan swept her gaze smugly across the crowd. “Now, let’s give a warm round of applause for
Serena!”
Her words only added fuel to the fire, and a few hot–headed students immediately stood up.

“Applause? No way!!
“Serena, if you dare to ruin “The Light, I’ll kill you!”
Hearing the insults, Celeste relaxed. But Sidney was on edge.
She could tolerate many things, but never music. Now, someone was about to desecrate her faith right in front of her. How could I endure it?
“I need to step out.”
Her voice carried deep resentment.
Celeste was understanding. “Go get some fresh air.”
“Yeah.”
Sidney stormed out, her face cold.
Backstage, Rowan was panicking and quickly grabbed a student council member. “There’s been
a mistake! Serena was supposed to perform ‘Bird Symphony to the Phoenix‘!”
The student council member disdainfully pushed her hand away. “The program list we received says otherwise. We don’t make mistakes.”
Scoffing, he sneered, “The Light‘ is a shortcut for attention–seekers like her. If she wanted the spotlight, she should’ve actually practiced. It’s too late to change it now!”
“Serena…”
Rowan was on the verge of tears.
Serena patted her shoulder. “It’s fine. I know ‘The Light–a little.”
A little
Rowan’s heart sank completely.
Morgan stepped down from the stage, sneering, “Serena, aren’t you going up?”
Serena glanced at her indifferently. “Is this fun for you?”
Morgan was momentarily stunned, then chuckled. “It’s fun!”
“Watching you make a fool of yourself is
very fun!”

She no longer bothered to hide her disdain. After this performance, Serena would be the Haven High School’s biggest laughingstock, an enemy to Sidney, and utterly despised by every serious
musician
“Better clean your neck while you’re at it!” Serena flipped the curtain aside and stepped onto the stage.
Morgan spat on the ground.
What an act!
She had already performed tonight, and her votes were steadily at the top. I am the future of the Arts Department! Serena is nothing but a joke.
As soon as Serena took the stage, boos erupted. She ignored them, lifted the trumpet that Rowan had bought her, and played the first note…
Sidney had just stepped outside the venue, her foot barely touching the last step down when a high–pitched trumpet sound pierced the sky.
It was like a divine hand tearing apart the heavy clouds, letting light pour through.
At the corner outside, Indigo, cigarette in hand, suddenly froze.
“The Light” had originally been composed for the trumpet.
But someone had told Sidney that trumpet performances wouldn’t sell well. That it would be more popular if played on the violin.
And so, “The Light” became the version the world knew today.
But the trumpet and violin had completely different souls.
The violin carried the smooth, sentimental passion of Western music.
The trumpet… was a battle cry, a warning signal. It was a roaring river bursting through dams, a sound that could shatter all darkness and bring light back to the earth.
Sidney felt as though the chaotic sky above her had been torn apart.
Sunlight struck her mind like a revelation. Before she knew it, she had turned back, rushing through the doors-
And saw the figure on stage.
The dark stage was empty except for a single beam of light illuminating Serena’s gown, sleek as
a raven’s feather.
