He should never have hoped. Never have tried to hold on.

Just then, Serena pushed open the door.

Lebron’s black eyes flashed for a moment, but he quickly dropped his head, unwilling to look at her, unwilling to acknowledge her. He didn’t need anyone showing up just to go through the

motions.

“This is for you.”

He froze. A pink box was suddenly in front of him.

“I spent the whole morning finding a game that suits you. If you don’t want it, I’ll just give it to Thanos.”

Lebron immediately clutched the box, finally looking up. “You spent the whole morning?”

“Yeah.”

His ears warmed, and all his resentment seemed to melt away.

He carefully opened the box and found a little princess on the cover.

“Do you like it?”

The princess was beautiful, with big round eyes and soft black curls–she looked a lot like

Serena.

“Mm. I like it.”

Thanos, still holding his lunch and peeking in from the doorway, couldn’t resist chiming in. “He usually plays horror games and murder mysteries–dark stuff. If you’d told me, I could’ve come with you…”

Before he could finish, a murderous glare shot across the room, making him shiver for no

reason.

Summer suddenly felt over.

Olivia had never seen anyone coax Lebron so well. She felt her daughter was truly capable- and she felt even better about adopting Serena.

At Morrow Manor, after lunch, Mica saw Nathan out the door and lowered her voice. “I heard Lebron was hospitalized again yesterday. They had to work for hours to save him. I don’t think

Mica handed him his briefcase and added, “I also heard the hospital’s been urging Arbor to go after GoldCure. A single bottle is worth a few million dollars…”

And to actually cure Lebron, one bottle wouldn’t be enough. It would take tens of millions.

If it were just hundreds of thousands, they could scrape it together. But tens of millions…

Right now, Mica’s greatest fear was that the main branch would use Lebron’s treatment as an excuse to demand money from them. That was a bottomless pit.

Nathan’s irritation flared. “I know what I’m doing.”

Finally, Monday arrived. In the past, Zachary had to be dragged to school by Angela, but today he was out the door by six, more eager than any senior cramming for SATS.

He’d already decided exactly how to pose when accepting Serena’s console, how to make his disdain clear.

And he knew exactly what to say–how to tell her, in a proud, cold voice, that even if she gave him the console, he would never let her return to the Reed family. He would once again declare to the whole school that he had only one sister, and that was Celeste.

Naturally, the more witnesses the better. The school gate was the perfect stage.

Everything was ready–except Serena never appeared. He waited from six–thirty until the first class at eight, but she never showed.

His face grew darker by the minute. Serena, if you don’t come soon, I’m not taking your gift at all.

Frustration built, but he still refused to leave.

By eight–thirty, the gate was empty, and he stood there alone, as if in a silent standoff with himself.

At nine, Celeste returned from a follow–up X–ray at the hospital. Seeing her brother, her heart softened. “My hand’s fine. You don’t have to worry.”

Zachary barely reacted, just giving a faint “Oh” as his gaze stayed fixed on the road to school.

Celeste then realized he wasn’t here for her. She tried, “Zachary, are you waiting for someone?”

At the mention, his temper spiked. “Does Serena not know today is Monday?”

“Someone who cheats on exams and now skips class–does she not want to go to college at all?”

Celeste was stunned. It took her a long moment to collect herself. “I heard Lebron’s sick and in the hospital. Serena’s staying to look after him.”

“Lebron? Who’s that?”

“He’s the Morrow family’s son. Serena’s little brother now.”

The nameless anger inside him finally exploded. Serena, you ungrateful brat. You’d rather stay in the hospital with that stray brother than come give me my gift? Just you wait.

He spun on his heel and stalked off. Standing so long had aggravated the leg injury Kennedy had given him; the old wound was flaring up. He hissed in pain and limped away.

Celeste stood at the gate, feeling a sudden chill in the air.

Inside the hospital, Serena sneezed hard and rubbed her itchy nose. “Hachoo!”

Olivia and Arbor never expected their children to make something of themselves through school. When both kids said they wanted to stay in the hospital, the parents agreed without hesitation.

What could be more important than having the whole family together?
