Chapter 55 No Need to Cheat

“I don’t need to cheat to get first place,” Serena said flatly.

This wasn’t even a serious exam. In a place as small as Evervale City, there wasn’t likely to be a single test that could push her to that point.

With that, the matter was settled-at least on the surface. When Shiloh stepped out of Class 19, he realized his back was damp with sweat.

Everyone still remembered the time Remy had made Serena stand in the hall. Some had even been watching to see if he’d suffer “payback.” For the first few days, nothing happened. But just this past weekend, while riding his bike to buy groceries, Remy had run into a purse-snatcher. He’d been yanked off his bike, slammed into the ground, split his head open, and twisted his ankle.

The injuries weren’t serious-just a handful of stitches, maybe three… or eight-but still. The man who’d made her stand couldn’t stand up himself now.

From the time he offended Serena to the time he got “hit back,” quite a bit of time had passed. Still… better safe than sorry.

He’d been raised by his parents for this long-it hadn’t been easy.

As Shiloh headed downstairs, he couldn’t help glancing up at the sky to make sure there were no flowerpots or bird droppings falling his way. After all, he’d just deprived Serena of three thousand dollars in prize money.

But as homeroom teacher, he had to take that risk if it meant motivating Class 19 to actually

try.

Shiloh had barely left when someone from the student council came to fetch Serena. She slipped out the back door and almost brushed shoulders with Indigo.

Even with a baseball cap pulled low, there was no hiding the bruises on his face,

“What happened? Took a wrong turn down a haunted alley?” Solstice asked, wide-eyed.

“Yeah. Haunted,” Indigo muttered, shooting Serena a cold glance. She didn’t so much as turn her head, which only made him more frustrated.

The one who’d called her over was Joshua, the student council vice president. It was about the Arts Department.

“Now that Sidney’s gone, your department has two vice presidents. By seniority and merit, it should-”

Serena saw right through them. She’d been playing the game of intimidation and politics while these people were still in diapers.

“Morgan, didn’t you want to be president? I’ll make it happen for you.”

Joshua froze. I wasn’t even done talking-who said you could cut in?

Morgan was equally stunned. You’ll “make it happen” for me? Do you even hear yourself?

The other Arts Department members stayed silent.

If Morgan had taken first place at the welcome party, no one would have objected to her becoming president. But she’d lost to Serena, and by a wide margin.

That made her appointment lack credibility.

Not that they wanted Serena as president-someone like her had no place in the student council.

But if Morgan qualified, why couldn’t they?

The Arts Department was full of self-styled geniuses, each convinced they were the most talented. Without someone like Sidney, who could dominate with pure ability, the department was destined to splinter into chaos.

Even if they begged her, Serena would never

never take the position.

She gave Morgan a cool, steady look. “You’re petty, shameless, and always scheming in the shadows-but that makes you a perfect fit for the student council, Go for it.”

The sincerity in her voice was almost convincing.

The others, already doubtful of Morgan, immediately thought back to the welcome party incident-her name swapped without her consent, her chosen piece replaced with “The Light,” the president’s favorite. There was no question whose handiwork that had been.

With a schemer like Morgan as president, anyone who threatened her would be targeted. They’d never get their chance to shine.

Serena walked away without a backward glance, leaving a mess of resentment and suspicion behind. She’d stirred up infighting in the Arts Department and insulted the student council all in one go.

Joshua had just gotten his first real taste of how vicious this devil could be.

By midday, the basketball team was up for their P.E. fitness test.

Joshua sought out Patrick Jensen, president of the athletic department. “Thanos is doing the basketball assessment.”

Patrick made an OK sign. “Got it.”

The players lined up to enter. Joshua tossed Thanos a cold smirk before walking away.

Thanos didn’t notice—he was busy yelling toward the sidelines. “Serena! Record a video for me!”

She ignored him, sucking on a lollipop.

Rowan tugged her sleeve. “Thanos is calling you.”

“I didn’t hear anything,” Serena replied.

Rowan had no words for that.

Then Thanos shouted again, “Lebron likes basketball!”

A second later, Rowan watched Serena pull out her phone and open the camera.

Rowan was even more speechless now.

Thanos grinned at the lens and gave a triumphant wave.

Today, he was going to show the bedridden Lebron the best version of himself—become his pride, his inspiration, his reason to fight.
