The moment those words left his mouth, the entire class went stiff.

Most of the points that earned the team award had been Serena’s doing. Yet not a single one of them had voted for her.

Even someone as thick-skinned and easygoing as Solstice couldn’t let that fact go.

“Well?” Serena looked at him like she was looking at a stranger.

Other than Rowan, she had no real connection with anyone in this class.

Solstice started to sweat under the weight of her gaze. “Uh… there’s three thousand dollars in prize money. How do you want to split it?”

From the front, Natalie curled her lip. “We’ve always split it evenly between everyone who participated.”

It wasn’t much money, but people didn’t resent having little-they resented inequality.

They especially couldn’t stand the idea of some country bumpkin stepping on their heads and still profiting off them.

“How can you even compare this to before?” a girl shot back. “The team prizes we won before were all consolation awards. All three events scored about the same, so splitting the money evenly wasn’t a big deal. But this time’s different!”

“What’s so different?” Natalie bristled. “Sure, we didn’t get many votes, but without our votes, our class wouldn’t have gotten first place at all!”

“Technically true, but…”

“But what?” Natalie’s friend, who had also competed, jumped in to back her up.

The girl stuck out her tongue. “Why are you both so worked up? Forget I said anything.”

She barely knew Serena, but she couldn’t stand the attitude in the room. That didn’t mean she was about to make herself a target.

The ones who had competed were all people who’d been close with Kennedy before. Naturally, they carried grudges and bias against Serena, and their looks now were far from friendly.

Serena figured they’d probably forgotten who they were dealing with-she’d been away a

Solstice felt the chill prickle across his skin. For the sake of “class harmony,” he rushed to speak. “I’ve got an idea!”

He glanced at Serena first, and when she didn’t object, he continued, “We split it based on votes.”

“What?” Natalie and the others exploded.

Serena had gotten several hundred votes. Combined, the rest of them hadn’t even reached a hundred. That meant she’d take home more than two thousand dollars. Natalie, who had competed solo, would get a decent share-but the nine-person dance team would be left with almost nothing.

It wasn’t about the money-well, not entirely. It was about the insult.

More than two thousand for one person, and not even a hundred for another?

“No way! We’re not agreeing to that!” This time, Natalie didn’t even have to lead-Sophia and the rest of the dance team stood up together.

Serena’s eyes swept over them. “And you think you’re in a position to bargain with me?”

Cold.

When it came to money, Serena was always serious. If it wasn’t hers, she might swindle it. If it was hers, no one was getting it without her say-so.

If she felt like giving it, fine. If not-and you tried to take it-you were asking for death.

Solstice could feel the temperature dropping, the whole class holding its breath. Even the nine-member team went silent under her gaze.

The only one who seemed immune to Serena’s temper was Rowan.

She pulled out a carton of milk, jabbed in a straw, and handed it to Serena, “Serena, don’t waste your energy on them. Have some milk, cool off.”

Have some milk, cool off…

It was like telling a half-grown tiger that wanted to bite someone to drink its bottle first-then

deal with the foolish humans later.

The mood was tense, the feeling in the air strange.

If it had been anyone else, someone would have laughed by now. But with Serena, no one dared move, let alone smile.

That was when another completely oblivious presence walked in.

Shiloh stepped into the classroom, seemingly unaware of the suffocating atmosphere. “Are you guys talking about how to split the prize money? I’ve got a suggestion.”

With the homeroom teacher here, the class loosened up a bit.

“It’s October now, and the second monthly exam’s coming up soon. I say whoever gets first place in the class takes the whole three thousand dollars!”

Natalie’s smile widened.

Class 19 was full of academic slackers. Her scores in the Arts Department might not be as high as Kennedy’s or Sophia’s, but when it came to academics, she was always at the top.

“I agree!” she said right away.

Sophia and the others were annoyed-they’d be walking away empty-handed.

It wasn’t that they cared about the money, but at least this way, the country bumpkin wouldn’t profit from their hard work or trample them underfoot.

Sophia nodded. “I’m in, too.”

Shiloh’s gaze shifted to Serena, with a hint of caution.

Serena nodded. “Fine.”

Natalie almost laughed out loud. “Don’t tell me you actually think you can cheat your way into first place again this time?”.
