Even though they were in the middle of a lively dinner, Henrietta answered immediately. Though he wasn't physically present, Yosef was undoubtedly the main character of the evening.
The call connected, and Yosef’s face appeared on the screen, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Does calling in like this count as me being there?”
Henrietta raised an eyebrow slightly. So that was his intention.
Before she could answer, he added, “My apologies for missing such an important dinner.”
“You don’t have to apologize,” Henrietta said quickly. “Work is important. And this way, it’s like you’re here for the whole thing. You arranged all of this, after all.”
Yosef’s lips curved slightly. He seemed to appreciate her understanding and lack of drama. “Good. That’s good to hear.”
Henrietta felt her face flush. She had had some wine with dinner, but she wasn’t sure if the heat in her cheeks was from the alcohol or something else. She just nodded.
Zelina noticed and asked with a smile, “Is that Yosef?”
Henrietta pressed her lips together. “Yes, Mom. Mr. Nash is on a video call, so he can join the dinner too.”
Zelina’s smile widened. “Then you two should talk.”
Henrietta felt her face grow even warmer.
Yosef, having heard her, seemed to have a deeper smile in his eyes, though his expression remained habitually cool. He was wearing only a white dress shirt and a black tie, a simple, clean, and disciplined look that somehow exuded an incredible magnetism.
He stared at the screen, his strong fingers loosening his tie as he picked up a cigarette from the pack on his desk.
“You’re calling her Mom already?” he asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
Now Henrietta’s face felt like it was on fire, though she couldn’t understand why she was blushing so intensely. It was perfectly normal to change her form of address. She hadn’t been coy about it earlier, so why was she acting this way now?
“Yes,” Henrietta nodded, patting her cheeks. “I’ve had a little wine.”
She offered the excuse, afraid Yosef might misunderstand her blushing.
“I see,” Yosef nodded. “Finish your dinner. When you get back to Elysium Manor, call me.”
“Oh, okay,” Henrietta said.
Yosef held the unlit cigarette between his fingers. “I’m hanging up now. I have to get back to work.”
“Okay, go ahead.”
