Winona agreed. [Charlotte has a point. I mean, why else would a man like him say something like that? Forget women, I think any man would be willing to be with him!]
Henrietta covered her face, trying to stifle a laugh. That was a bit of an exaggeration, but… logically, it made a terrifying amount of sense.
Charlotte typed again: [Oh my god, the more we talk about it, the more it seems plausible. Do you think that’s why things didn’t work out with Britney?]
Winona replied: [!!! It’s very possible!]
Henrietta finally typed back. [You can’t be serious.]
Winona mused. [It’s hard to say. But he doesn’t exactly look like he’s incapable, does he?]
Charlotte shot back. [How can you tell just by looking? Someone would have to… personally verify it.]
At that, Henrietta quickly typed: [Okay, that’s enough. I’m going to sleep.]
Charlotte sent a hug emoji. [Go to sleep. It’s okay.]
Henrietta was speechless. They were talking as if it were a confirmed fact. But… there was a certain logic to it, wasn’t there? She frowned, feeling completely confused.
Another message came through from Winona. [If—and this is a big if—it’s true… Henrietta, what would you do?]
Henrietta stared at the message for a long time, giving it serious thought before she replied: [Then I suppose I would accept him.]
She had heard about such things but had never experienced them herself. Since she had nothing to compare it to, it didn’t really matter. Besides, life was about more than just one thing. And they had only agreed to a marriage of mutual respect; whether that aspect of their relationship would ever come into play was still uncertain.
Seeing her serious reply, Winona wrote: [That’s fair. And good. He’s a good person, handsome, and rich. That’s enough. Nobody’s perfect.]
Charlotte added: [Exactly! And with modern medicine and… tools… who needs a man, really? You can still get the job done!]
Henrietta was momentarily speechless, but then typed: [Alright, alright. I’m really going to sleep now. Goodnight.]
She turned off her phone, rolled over, and hugged her pillow, his scent still lingering in the air.
Could a man as exceptional as him really have such a flaw? She shook her head. She couldn’t think about it anymore. She would deal with it later.
Matteo shoved her away. “Who begged you? Weren’t you begging me? All you ever do is demand more, more, more! With a sex drive like yours, why don’t you just go sell yourself?”
Furious, Artina grabbed a handful of his hair. “You’re telling me to sell myself? Don’t think I can’t live without you! I’m still a Harmon family heiress, but without me, you’re nothing! You’ll just have to go back to licking Henrietta’s boots, but she won’t even give you the time of day! She just humiliates you, and you deserve it!”
Matteo yanked his head away. “Then get out! Go on, get lost!”
Ever since the chat logs had been permanently deleted and his attempts to win Henrietta back had failed, Matteo had become moody and prone to fits of helpless rage, his feelings a tangled mess of confusion.
Artina froze for a moment, then let go of his hair and started to cry. “You know I love you, that I can’t leave you, and you still treat me like this.”
The moment she showed weakness, Matteo’s anger subsided. He glanced at her. “Then be a good girl and stop throwing tantrums. It’s just kneeling and apologizing. It’s not like it will kill you.”
Artina wiped her tears and sniffled, her tantrum over. She was frustrated, so incredibly frustrated. Her ambition was huge; she was no longer satisfied with the Harmon family’s status, which was barely considered upper class. She wanted to leap across social strata, to become the most powerful woman in Juno City, feared and respected by all. But to achieve that dream, the only person she could rely on right now was Matteo.
Only when Matteo’s plan succeeded could she enter the world of the true elite, to become a power player like Henrietta—arrogant, untouchable, and accountable to no one. That was why she couldn’t afford to break up with him. He was her only ticket to the top. Plus, he was a famous actor, charming and talented.
