Matteo's face was pale, his eyes filled with tears and utter confusion. He couldn't understand it. He had risked his life for her, and she... she wasn't moved in the slightest? It didn't make any sense.
Henrietta looked at him, her tone detached. "Do you remember what Leon told me?"
Matteo froze. Leon, who had been trying to remain invisible in the corner, also tensed up. He never expected Henrietta to bring that up.
Matteo stammered, "You... you didn't believe him, did you? Besides, he was lying!"
Leon quickly jumped in. "Right. I... I had inappropriate feelings for her, so I... I made it all up!"
"You can say whatever you want now," Henrietta said calmly. "But I’ve learned that shadows only exist where there's a reason for them." She looked at Leon. "You were so convincing back then. You were on the verge of telling me who the other woman was. And now you're saying it was all a lie?"
Leon could only stammer out a defense. "I really... I wasn't thinking straight. I just... I made up that lie. Besides, you... you didn't believe a word of it, right?"
"Fifty-fifty," Henrietta replied. "Once a seed of doubt is planted, it never truly goes away. I just didn't want to know who it was, and I didn't want to dredge up the past. That doesn't mean the doubt wasn't there."
Hearing her say that, Matteo finally understood. The reason she was being so hard and cold, the reason she wasn't moved even after he'd saved her life, was because she truly suspected he had cheated on her.
"Henrietta!" Matteo cried out desperately. "Leon was lying!"
"It doesn't matter anymore," Henrietta replied. "We broke up a long time ago. I have no interest in digging it up."
