Chapter 179

Chapter 179

Luna Demetra.

I look back at the tree line and Emris is heading out of the woods.

Heading out?

One would think my mate would remain here to baby me. To make sure I’m alright. Because I did a quick search on these woods, and it turns out it’s the most dangerous place to be in Rockville. Rogues. Wild animals. Bee hives with red venom-

Emris is walking away from the exercise he set up like he has somewhere better to be. And Laura is standing there with her arms folded and this small pleased smile on her face like they’re two colleagues on a coffee break discussing their students.

“She’s getting too handsy,” I say, thinking Lolly is beside me.

“I think she likes him.” Travis says.

I turn fast. “W-what?”

“Trybrid to Trybrid. Most men are weak around my sister. I think she’s feeling this one.”

T

“But he’s married!”

“Yeah. Heard he divorced the first one and had her arrested. Also heard there’s some kind of bad history with the second Luna’s family-”

“That was in the past!” I say it immediately. “They’re no longer enemies.”

It’s after I say it that I realize I’m being defensive and my voice just went up an octave. Travis is looking at me now.

“I heard it mentioned in class. We should move.”

Wren stands up from tying her shoelace.

“What’s the plan?” Lolly asks.

“Everyone is wearing perfume,” Travis says. “They’ll start sweating soon, scent glands mixing, it gets harder to track anything. Plus there are were-jaguars, were-panoramas and those things from Egos pack here. I’m the only one with an advanced enough wolf-”

“Demetra’s wolf is damn good!” Lolly says sharply.

“Yeah, omega-

“She’s also mixed with-”

“Nothing but omega!” I cut in quickly before Lolly finishes that sentence with Alpha. “A special omega. That’s all I’m mixed with.

“And you, Wren?” he asks.

Wren giggles, stops herself and pulls something from her pocket. It looks like a phone from another decade wrapped in charging cables and zip ties with a small antenna she extends with a click.

“This is Sniff 2.0.” she says.

Chapter 179.

Cholly states at it. “Is that a phone from the past?

“It’s a materials locator. I connect it to the school wifi and it searches for the nearest onion signature in the radius.” She looks at me, stressed. “My wolf cannot locate an onion in these woods. This is my only option.”

“When did you build that?” I ask.

“When you come from a small pack, you pick up advanced engineering. I built race cars at age nine. When your wolf isn’t powerful you find other ways.” She looks at Lolly. “You?”

“I’m with…um.” Lolly gestures at Travis. “Him.”

Travis puts his hand on his head and laughs.

“You lot not moving?”

We all turn and it’s Adrien!

The were-panther. The one who hears everything. Has he been watching us from a distance this whole time. Why is he talking to us?

And no. No way.

Is that Cassie and the damn Twin Alphas walking toward us?

I step back where Travis is shielding me a bit and his body blocks half my view. Axis and Atlas are coming forward with

Cassie too.

“We’re moving,” Travis says. “Our own team.”

Atlas laughs. “Oh right. The dork in glasses, the girl who looks like she belongs in Barbie’s playpen. And the…” He looks at me. “What do I even call you?”

“White Omega. And honestly? You’re bluffing.” I gesture at his pants. “You just hung your tail between your legs in front of Emris. All that big energy was nowhere to be found when the Alpha clocked you and your twin. The blonde vomited his little breakfast and you…began answering the Alpha like the good little boy you are.” I tilt my head. “Maybe you can take a rest in Barbie’s playpen, Ken.”

Our group laughs behind me.

“Travis.” Cassie’s voice. “Come with us. This one talks too much. I’in just waiting for Mascot to put my claws on her.”

I turn and look at her.

Specifically at the shorts she’s wearing. Because if you spend thirty seconds looking up these woods on google, you’ll find bee hive warnings everywhere. Red venom.

“We’ll get our chance but I’ll make sure to claw

you

first.” I say

and we walk away.

We take the right path. They take the left. Close enough that I can still see them through the trees and I can feel Axis looking at the back of my head.

I glance at Travis.

His hands are in his pockets and he’s walking slower than the rest of us. He’s not distracted. His eyes move through the trees carefully, not settling anywhere, reading something the rest of us aren’t picking up.

Chapter 179

thething is registering for him

Let’s stop” I say and everyone looks at me.

“Why?”

Just wait

We stop. Through the trees on the left the Twin Alphas slow down too. They look at us…then they pivot and take another road and disappear.

“No freaking service” Wren holds up her Sniff 2.0 device, tapping the screen like she’s trying to wake it from a coma. “This thing is done for.”

I look at my phone and there’s not a single bar.

“At least I can take a snap and post it later.” Lolly holds her phone up, angling for a picture as the sunlight catches the trees behind her.

“Um, why don’t we go…. that way instead so we’re far from wherever that crew is?” I point toward a path that slopes downward, away from where the Twin Alphas disappeared.

Travis nods and we start moving.

Twenty minutes of hiking.

The woods open up as we go deeper… wider than I expected, genuinely enormous makes it believable that three hundred students could be scattered through it without catching a single glimpse of each other. On the trees, there are patches of moss and ferns and wild mushrooms.

It’s actually beautiful.

It’s also getting rocky.

The ground under our feet changes gradually….soil giving way to stone, and I know this usually means that there’s a river somewhere.

And I’m literally already thirsty at this point.

I don’t even remember what the assignment is supposed to be about anymore. My brain is just thinking abous really cold water. Really clean water. Really now water.

If I knew field work meant walking around the woods like some kind of survivalist, I would have brought a bottle water or something with me.

“That water looks clean.” I say to Wren, but it’s really me using style to get permission. Like if she agrees, it’s officially clean then I can drink it without consequences.

“Yeah it is, there’s actually a waterfall not far from-”

I’m already past Lolly once my verification system gives me a go

ahead!

I find the stream where the rocks flatten out into a shallow bank and I get on my knees and I scoop water with both hands and drink it. It is cold and clean and I make a crazy chuckle.

1 scoop more and the water starts to bubble.

Chapter 179-

is small at first, then larger, then aggressive. The surface churns like something is boiling underneath?

I stop for a moment but my hand hovers over the water. Is there a fish underneath or something?

I inch closer and squint into the dark water. And in a very quick secord, my wolf shoves me backward that I land on my elbows and look up.

Atlas comes out of the water.

Shifting out.

Water cascades off his body. His jaws are open, and from his mouth pours more water…not just dripping, but gushing, like his lungs are filled with the entire stream. It spills from his fangs in thick, gurgling torrents, mixed with saliva and something darker. Something that looks like old blood.

pit,

His claws are dripping. Water webs between his toes, stretches like strands of spit, breaks and reforms as he shakes himself onto the bank.

His shoulders hunch, his spine arches, and his eyes….his eyes are the worst part.

Barnacle-like crust are around his claws. He coughs and a small dead fish falls out of his mouth and lands on the rocks at my

feet.
