Chapter 192
Alpha Emris
Contd.
“Our engagement party was coming soon, and went out to pick out a gift or her.” Slade runs a band through his hair, pacing back and forth in front of me.
“I meet Riley there. And she ends up giving me advice on what necklace to pick. I had my eyes on the red and the green. The green matched Sabrina’s eyes. I was just about to pick it when Riley confirmed that it was the better choice.”
He holds his hand to count.
“That’s another place I had seen her. And then fast forward…a pack event. Sabrina wears the green necklace. Then for moon sake, we meet Riley there…AGAIN… who just happens to say out loud, ‘It’s amazing that you went with this option.”
“And let me guess.” I fold my arms slowly. “Sabrina doesn’t even know you’ve been running into Riley.”
“No.”
“Oh shoot-”
“We’re getting bonded in two weeks, Emris.” Slade drags his hand down his face. “Two weeks. And now she’s looking at me like I’m a liar. Demetra is going to get involved and then it becomes a whole thing and it’s a freaking mess.”
“Okay.” I press my hand flat over my nose and think.
“What are we talking about?” Silver materializes beside us holding a tropical drink like he’s on vacation. “Eden said you messed up.”
“W–what?” Slade looks like he genuinely might die an Alpha death right now. “I hope my old man hasn’t heard about it since everyone is passing this news around like currency!”
Slade’s forehead creases and I can tell he is suffering. Honestly I’m just deeply grateful this isn’t me and Demetra standing in this position.
“Any advice for bloody me.”
“You’ve got to fix it.” Silver says.
“Yeah, no kidding. You think I don’t know that?”
“Okay, how about this.” I look between them. “I go talk to Demetra, explain your side of the story, and if I can make it make sense to her then she makes it make sense to Sabrina. The girls restore your credibility and you stay completely away from Riley going forward.”
“Bet.” Slade puts one hand on my shoulder with the solemn energy of a wolf blessing someone before battle.
“I’ll handle Tiffany I guess-” Silver mumbles to himself and I chuckle walking past me.
I find my way to Demetra’s bedroom which I know well… going back to the times I came here at night to see her when everything between us was still complicated and I was operating entirely on stubbornness and night vision. If it’s any consolation I never actually saw the full house because it was always dim when I arrived and I was never there for the architecture in the first place.

Chapter 199
Fittle girl. I spot Amira sprinting toward me in the corridor and catch her before she completes the escape…she was clearly mid–execution.
“No no no!” She screams, trying to wriggle out of my grip, already laughing
“Where’s your mom?”
She shakes her head with her whole face, mouth pressed shut as if she swore toddler secrecy I know how to handle that. I tickle her.
Amira falls against my chest, laughing hysterically, “She’s there.” She points down the hall, still giggling. “Mommy is there.”
I kiss her forehead after the intelligence is delivered and make my way to the living area where the girls are all gathered. The scowl on Demetra’s face when I walk in is significant enough that I’m genuinely reconsidering whether I can help Slade at all. The last thing I need is getting pulled into a conversation where Riley’s name comes up. I’m not trying to remind Demetra that I have any kind of history with Riley.
This is genuinely delicate territory.
“Honestly, we should kill him.” Tiffany says.
I blink.
“No, we should skin him first. Get Emris to do it since we can’t make our hands bloody.” Teddy says.
“I’m not participating in that.” I say and every head in the room turns to look at me simultaneously. Four pairs of eyes. Four expressions ranging from annoyed to amused to don’t–you–dare–get–in–our–way. I consider leaving and pretending like I was never here.
“Um.” I clear my throat, hoping I’m not the next person they skin alive. “Just wanted to remind Demetra that we have to wash up and get ready for breakfast.”
Demetra gets up and walks toward me. I wait until she’s in front of me before I follow her out. We make it to the bedroom where our luggage have been brought up. I stay in a position, thinking about how to approach this-
“Did Slade tell you what he did?” Demetra whispers at me.
“Uh.” I keep my face completely open. “What did he do?”
“Seeing Riley. Letting her pick the engagement gift he got for Sabrina and then her proudly making it clear to Sabrina that she had a hand in it. I didn’t think hiring her to train the new Deltas was going to be a mistake.”
“Well, as long as she does her job well-
“Are you insane?”
”
“Um.” I slap my hand against the back of my neck as Demetra stares at me with annoyance like I’m the one who did that shit. Like I personally went to the jewelry store with Riley and picked out the damn necklace.
She shakes her head and goes into the closet.
I can hear her talking to herself. Muttering. Opening drawers. Shuffling hangers.
“I mean…yes, of course it affects her work too.”
I can hear her moving back and forth in there until she comes out with a robe and places it on the bed.
