“You’re not lying to us?” Silver says.

“Of course not. I’m fine. I’m just glad I’m no longer there.”

Little sis rests on Mom, who places her hand across her forehead and makes her rest there….just the way Teddy would do when she was a little kid that consistently looked for trouble. Three of us would chase her all the way to Mom

“I miss Regan.” Teddy murmurs and I hear it.

“I’m sure wherever he is, he misses you too.” Mom kisses her forehead.

Teddy looks up at me. “What did those bastards actually want?”

“You should focus on resting-”

The door opens and Demetra comes in with a smile, pulling the door shut behind her.

“How’s Eden?” I ask.

“He’s fine. Got some stitches, and the doctor said he can go home.” She looks at Teddy. “He’s okay.”

“Good. Now I can go ahead and give him a fucking injury that he deserves-”

“Emris, don’t say that!” Teddy lifts her head from Mom’s shoulder.

I snarl inwardly.

“He was drunk. We were both drunk-”

“I don’t give a shit.” I snarl. “If he cannot protect Teddy’s dignity with his might, then he shouldn’t be taking her out at night when the emergency went off already.”

“Eden’s fine..,so stop listening to Emris.” I turn around and watch Demetra and Teddy hug.

“If I were you, I’d go say goodbye to Eden now. The next time you’ll see each other will be when I say

so.”

Teddy pushes the sheets off and runs off to do so.

“You can’t be nicer?” Demetra faces me. “She literally just got the biggest scare of her life.”

“This is me being nice! Mom, can you go find out if she’s being released from the hospital?”

“I’ll go grab coffee for everyone, pether of us has had a good sleep or even breakfast” Silver gets up too and leaves.

A bit of silence exists between age and Demetra. She’s just looking at her shoes. In Jooking at her shoes too.

“Go grab something to eat.”

“When we get home-

“Can you stop being so stubborn!”

“I’m not being stubborn.” She lifts her chin. “What makes you think I care to eat in hospital? Silver hasn’t eaten. The Gammas, Zetas….no one has slept, everyone has been standing on their feet!”

Demi is my true mate. I can feel her being weak. I know her heart rate by the bond, and it’s taking a different rhythm than its usual one. It’s not like I don’t care that others haven’t eaten. It’s the fact that whenever she walks in front of me, I can tell her pulse is weak. I can tell her heartbeat is not as fast as it should be..

I bend slightly toward the bed and Demetra turns her face the other way, which puts her cheek directly in front of me.

I kiss it.

“Because you’re my mate and you’re getting weak in front of me. The bond doesn’t let me ignore that.”

She stares at my face.

“Fine. When we all get home, you can eat something. I won’t bother you.”

Demetra still doesn’t say anything to me.

“Mmh?” I wiggle my nose at her and she smiles.

Okay. There can never be a best time to tell her this, but I have to do it anyway. She’s gonna know when we get to the pack house the discussion Laura and I had in the driveway. There’s no better time to say it.

“Um. Laura has to kind of stay in the pack house right now.”

Demetra looks at me like there’s nothing worse I can say outside of what has already happened today.

“Radius has eyes we haven’t identified yet and we don’t know which packs he’s aligned with. If Laura is outside the pack house we can’t control what information gets back to him-”

“I understand, Emris.”

“She’ll stay downstairs or so.”

“Alright.”

Demetra says it again. I blink. It bothers me that she’s not asking when I’m going to fix all of this or even… hitting me. It’s hurting me that her face is so tired from everything.

“Yeah. I guess it’s alright then? You’re tired, so that’s why-”

“I don’t trust Laura!” Demetra exhales.

I know. What I mean is after today, when we all come back together to talk about this, I don’t want Laura to be part of that conversation. I don’t trust that she isn’t feeding information back to the barbarian pack while pretending to help us

“Okay. Got it. She won’t be. Anything else?”

“The wing at the side of the pack. Not the main pack house.”

“Donc.” I answer.

“That’s all for now.”

I exhale an I’m about to rest my head on her legs when Silver comes back into the room with the coffees.

“The coffee tastes like shit.” He sets them down. “The doctor says Teddy can go home. Come on, I want the chef to make me a real coffee. And Neptune’s, I need to sleep for oen thousand years!”

I get up first and pull Demetra up with her hand. She lazily hugs me with her face tucked into my chest.

The door opens and Ronin sees me holding his daughter. Yeah, he definitely has a few words to say to me about what i didn’t tell him earlier. I just know my life is fucked.

“Come here, Emris.”

He leaves. I let go of Demetra but hold her tighter for one extra second before I follow.

Allison and Ronin put me on the hot seat for about fifteen minutes as everyone is leaving the hospital. I give him all the reasons why I never thought big about it. I didn’t translate it. No pack had dared to attack the Covenant Pack, so I didn’t believe anyone would try.

Really, it’s an earful from Ronin. And I take it. It’s expected after hearing the disgusting stuff Radius said and the amount of time he made reference to Demetra. No father on earth wants to hear a bastard talk about his daughter like that!

As soon as the conversation is over, I jump Jupiter and let him know the new routine.

“Every Gamma has exactly five hours to sleep, rest, and whatever the fuck they want to do. Each and every day until we fix this! Effective immediately… three rotation shifts across all territory borders, no gaps between handovers. The Aegis unit moves to overnight status and they don’t come off until I say so. You find anything that doesn’t belong…a scent, a vehicle, a wolf you can’t identify… you don’t engage, you report directly to Silver or Jupiter and they come to me.

I forbid solo decisions after dark.

“Training doubles from tomorrow. Anyone lacking on training?” I bare my teeth. “I’m gonna fucking kill them with my own hands.”
