I see Derisha’s text over the phone where she’s confirmed that the kids are on the plane to Paris. I couldn’t even say goodbye to them or kiss them or explain why Mommy needed them to go somewhere far away without her. I keep telling myself they’re fine because Aunt Scotty went along with them so they have a familiar face to be around. They won’t be unhappy.

“Demetra?”

Wren knocks on the door, so I stop looking at my phone. She uses her hand to do a fake aeroplane to ask me if they are gone. I nod, smiling a bit.

“Yeah. They’re gone.”

Wren jumps slightly when she notices Monroe against the wall and I smile for the second time today which feels like an achievement.

“Is he going to be here all the time?”

“Is he gonna be here around you all the time?”

“Yes.” Monroe answers.

“You should take a break.” I look at him. “Go eat something. Rest your eyes. And find out if Jupiter has gotten any information about Laura and where she was on the day of the engagement.”

“Got it, Luna.” He’s gone.

Wren closes the door and sits across from me and I show her what I’ve been working, the locations I’ve circled and reconsidered and circled again.

“These locations?”

“Places I think Emris could be.” But then I go back to the question… Emris in nit his right mind so where would a wolf who isn’t himself actually go.” I press my forehead against the paper for a moment. “His favorite pub?”

“Definitely not a night club.” Wren says.

I stare again at where I wrote all my ideas.

“Okay. Um… where would a rogue go?”

“The woods.” Wren says.

“The woods. We have a few thick woods in our territory. Which part of our territory has the densest tree coverage and the most prey?”

Wren pulls up her phone immediately. “That would be Coast Six.”

“We start there then.”

“On our own!?”

“Of course on our own.” I say, getting up and opening the door to make sure that Monroe is not back yet. I shut the door again and come back to sit in front of Wren.

“Emris is not gonna hurt me.” I say.

Wren opens her mouth.

“What about me?” She points at herself. “He’s not even known me for long enough. He can kill me!”

“Fine. You don’t have to come. Just stay in your bedroom when I go. Monroe just has to believe that I’m there—”

“Ugh.” Wren throws her hands up. “Demetra, you really think I’m gonna allow you to go alone? But we’re gonna need some sort of man power. Should I call Travis?”

The moment I hear Travis, my ears perk up. All of a sudden, it blows my mind. I can’t believe I’ve been sitting next this whole time without thinking of Travis in all this. If anyone knows where Laura went or can find out it’s him. She’s his step- sister.

“Call him. Tell him I want to visit and ask him to send his address. Can you do that?”

Wren nods.

I leave the office to get to my room. I rush quicker on my way there. I met with Alpha Seth yesterday, and he agreed to replace the Crestville doctors. I know he only said yes because our friendship doesn’t carry the same friction that his relationship with Emris does. Whatever the reason, the pack hospital is now back in hands I trust.

As I tap the elevator, it opens and Lake comes out in a tank top with a towel around his neck, fresh from training with sweat across his forehead..

“Morning.” He brushes past me.

I simply take a breath and go into the elevator. But just as it’s about to close, Lake puts his hand in between and stands in between the golden closing doors.

“You changed the Cresthill doctors?”

I don’t respond to that. If I open my mouth, all I have is screaming! The fury and the grief and hatred of watching this blatant devil stand in my pack house and speak to me like a person with rights here. All I’ll end up doing is telling him how much I hate him and how much I can’t wait to see the day he dies. But he would enjoy it. He would enjoy every tear and every trembling word because a distressed Luna proving she can’t hold her pack together is exactly the image he needs to show the elders.

If I say nothing, he can’t read my mind.

“I guess you did.” He tilts his head. “Where are your kids?”

The moment he asks that, I feel my wolf want to lash out. But again, I quickly hold myself. I clench my jaw….that’s the only reaction I give him as I press the button again, over and over and over again until he gets away and the door closes.

Once it does, I take a thrashing breath and put in the code that leads to the hallway of the Luna’s chambers. I get in, pacing a bit before calming down somewhere on the bed.

“They are fine.” I tell myself in the empty room. “He can’t do anything to Amira and Milo. He would never be able to.”
