The building is cream colored with wide pillars at the entrance and the kind of generous open space that tells you immediately it was never rented. One can just tell that it was built by an outside pack so they could have a stable property over here.
I see Travis rushing toward me, but Monroe steps in front of me first.
“It’s fine.” I touch his arm lightly so he moves aside.
“Demetra, I heard what happened to Emris. Are you alright?” Travis reaches me and the concern on his face is immediate and genuine,
“Hardly.” I look around the entrance for any sign of Laura before I answer further. “Can we speak with you?”
“Of course. Come in.”
“Sure. Come in.”
I follow right behind Travis, and we all sit in the sitting room where he looks at us. The way Monroe’s face is clenched hardly makes what we’re doing here normal so I might just start.
“Is this where Laura stays?” I cross my legs.
“Yeah-”
“Was she here on the 29th?”
Travis thinks. “No. I don’t think so. I was at home playing mortal combat all day and she wasn’t home.”
“When did you last see her?” Monroe asks. Travis looks at him and then back at me with the confusion of someone trying to find the center of a conversation that keeps shifting,
“Demetra, I don’t understand…what exactly is going on?”
“Answer the questions first.”
“My sister hasn’t been here since-”

Travis is not done speaking when Laura gets in front of us. All of us look up at exactly the same moment. I’m on my feet and I cross to her before she can establish any distance where she holds eye contact with me. There’s a girl dark curls of hair, staring at me equally with a smile…she looks like someone who finds other people’s tension entertaining.
“What are you doing here? My father told me you cancelled the Cresthill contract after we brought over a hundred of our doctors to serve your pack-”
“So what? The Covenant Pack is filthy rich. I’ve paid whatever it costs to break it. You can tell your father that. After all, we covered the flights of the doctors. Sent our own jets to pick them up. So they should be happy they got paid without really doing anything.”
Laura squints. “I don’t know if it’s your first day as a Luna or something, but that’s not how pack relationships work.”
“I don’t give a fuck about how pack relationships work and I don’t need someone who is not a Luna to tell me how to be one! Where have you been?”

She scoffs. Excuse me?”
“Where have you been is the question-”
“I don’t give a fuck about your questions!”

“Somehow, you are right there by Emris. I take another step closer. “Perfectly available when he’s told he must get a second Luna according to the Barbarian contract. Positioned perfectly to stand in for as substitute but the exact night Emris goes missing you disappear too.” I look past her shoulder at the girl with the dark curls. “Is that the shapeshifter?”
“A shapeshifter?” Laura’s eyes narrow. “You’ve gone mad. You need to remember that all I came to West Virginia for was the Crestville doctors. I didn’t come here to be second Luna to anyone. But when it called for, I decided to help-”
“Where is Emris?”
“I don’t know what you’re asking me that for. What makes you think I can contain him? I may be a trybrid too but not like Emris.” She lifts her chin. “So I’m as confused as you whether you believe it or not.”
“Who are you?” I look toward the black–haired girl.
When she doesn’t answer, I turn to Travis.
“She’s Radius’s daughter.” He says quietly.
“Oh.” Monroe grunts. “The one Laura replaced hu?”
“Look.” The dark–haired girl steps forward. “I don’t know who you people are or what this is. But of course, another pack daddy is running, so of course they are gonna be upset.”
“Don’t say that, Ariadne-”
“Ariadne.” I repeat her name and stare. “Ariadne, what kind of wolf are you?”
“A Barbarian wolf, obviously.”
“Nah.” Monroe chuckles, stepping forward. “I sniff something else.”
I get out of his way so he can find out the truth.
“Stay back!” Laura growls.
I fold my arms. “If you have nothing to hide, you won’t ask Monroe to stay back.”

“You forget I’m a trybrid. Don’t let me hurt your Gamma. The bastard looks too overconfident for his own good.”
“You can try but if I were you, I would step out of the way.” Monroe advices her.
Laura bares her claws. I watch for the first time as her hybrid shift takes over. Her eyes become swirling violet. Her fangs crack out of her mouth. Her stance gets so much bolder that I can sincerely tell she’s powerful.
Monroe does not shift until he’s sure she has shifted.
“I’m ready” Laura smiles and signals Monroe forward with one hand.
Monroe pulls his hand out and lets the shift begin.

His fingers adjust slowly…cracking, curving, restructuring until what you have is one unified claw, sword–like. At least fifteen inches of steel–like, unified claw with jagged edges. He’s a sword wolf. When he’s not using his sword–like claws to fight, he uses an actual sword. If he cuts Laura even a minute bit, she’s gonna be poisoned and would need at least a week to get the poison out of her bloodstream.
Everyone in the Covenant Pack knows why because the claw and the blade operate from the same principle.
But if that were all, perfect.
Except Monroe’s skin begins to change. It hardens and becomes something that isn’t skin anymore. Metal, covering every inch of him so that claws find nothing to grip, fangs find nothing to puncture. And then pull begins where every piece of metal in the room starts moving. Monroe’s wolf is the one drawing it, controlling it and choosing where it goes.
Plus, who it finds.
Every single thing that carries metal here starts to move. Monroe’s wolf gets crazy but he can choose who to hit.
The first thing that smashes across Laura’s head is the iron. I’m not sure where it came from but it rams into her and she yells, no longer able to keep eyes on all of her surroundings as metals from every part of the house are moving helter- skelter. She comes closer to Monroe to start.
He lets her slash at him and she’s surprised when her claws don’t move into his skin. She can do this over and over again. Nothing is going to happen. The only person that’s gonna wear out is her.
There’s a reason Monroe is called Iron Wolf.
“Demetra, please tell him to stop!” Travis yells.
