“Right at the pack gate, Lake is talking to reporters. He’s live as we speak.” Creed says it and Derisha joins me in the sitting area as the television comes on.

Lake’s face fills the screen, dressed in a dark suit like he’s attending a funeral.

“Alpha Emris is dead. The Black Covenant Pack is trying to understand this grief, especially his Luna, Demetra, who is completely broken–hearted by what happened. The elders of the Black Covenant called me to talk about the reinstatement of the Alpha seat—”

“But the Alpha seat already has an heir.” A reporter angles the microphone toward him and I feel my anger building with every syllable he produces. Every single sentence coming out of his mouth is a lie stacked on a lie. The elders never called him. Emris is not dead. What exactly is he trying to accomplish on national television!?

“He brought the media here himself!” Derisha hisses. “He’s the one who started the rumor that Emris is dead. With the barbarian pack’s help, no doubt.”

Lake pretends to look sad for some reason. He bows his head. He presses his hand to his chest. “The girl is only a little child. The Black Covenant Pack cannot wait until she is at least eighteen years. Even at that, she would have to prove herself.”

“But the pack has a legitimate Luna. The true Alpha’s mate, she ought to take control of the pack. Isn’t that SO?”

“Demetra cannot do it by herself. She may be an Alpha’s daughter, but she just appeared in that world a few years ago. She needs all the help she can get.”

“So what does that mean?” The reporters asks…talking over each other now with the cameras tilting in his face.

“A bond has to happen.”

“But that makes no sense. She is the Alpha’s mate-”

“For the pack.” Lake looks directly into the camera. “It has to make sense.”

I turn away before listening to the rest of the shit this bastard is saying right outside the pack territory. I want to gut him. Maybe I should just give the live TV something interesting to watch by setting him on fire then and there-

“Demetra, don’t.”

Derisha is walking toward me as I tap the elevator to get out.

“If you go out there now, what’s gonna happen?” She steps in front of me. “You stand in front of the cameras which are gonna crowd around you like damn roaches and yell that Emris is not dead?”

“Yes, exactly that cause your son is not dead-”

“I know that! I gave birth to him. If he’s no longer in this world, I will be the first to feel it. And take some advice from someone who has been Luna after her husband’s dead body was brought to her. You don’t want to announce anything no matter what the hell the speculations are!”

I can see my own chest going up as I take deep breaths.

“I know what you’re feeling right now. Demetra, look at me, you have not slept since last night. Take a nap-” “No.” I shake my head. “When is the pack meeting starting? I need them to understand that Emris is not dead!”

“I will handle that.” She holds my shoulders. “I have handled them before, and I can do it again. You have to breathe. And remember that you are not the only one holding this pack together. I am still here. Alright?”

“But… But they need to also know that I’m not bonding anyone—”

“Is my brother dead!?”

Derisha and I both look left. Teddy is in tears in her sleepwear. Her hand is on her phone and it drops at the foot of the stairs as she’s crying profusely. Derisha lets go of me and goes to hug her Teddy who’s hysterically crying. All the housekeepers around are whispering the same thing with pity faces at me. They are all looking at me like I’m a widowed Luna.

They all think Emris is dead. That’s the narrative that’s going on.

Teddy’s crying becomes louder as Derisha takes her upstairs. I bend to pick up her phone only to see the messages multiplying in hundreds. They are saying RIP Alpha Emris, they are saying “We’re so sorry for your loss,” they are saying “The Black Covenant has fallen,” “Emris Covenant is gone,” “West Virginia has lost its strongest Alpha.”

Slowly, I continue scrolling over and over again until Derisha comes back and takes it away from my fingers.

“Please, Demetra. Eat something… then take a nap. I need you to close your eyes even if it’s for a few hours.”

“I don’t want to.”

“I’m not asking you. I’m telling you to!”

I get up and see Creed behind me. Before I can even ask him what the next we are supposed to be doing right now, he does something to my neck area that makes me pass out at once. I feel myself get caught before everything darkens before my eyes.

I wake up in my bedroom, and it’s very late at night which means I slept throughout the day, considering how dark it is. The moment I push myself up, I feel like crying, but I suck it up. I go to the bathroom and sit at the edge of the tub, thinking over and over again about everything. Then the hot shower is just blasting on me as I stare at absolutely nothing but my thoughts.

When I’m done bathing, I hear a door shut in my room, so I’m just sure that Summer has snuck in and put some food in. That’s exactly what it is, a golden tray of food on the table in the sitting area. I grab my laptop and curl my legs up to find out anything I can about the Sahara Den.
