When Demetra and her stupid elders invited me to their little pack meeting, I expected we were about to talk about the bonding date. Instead, those bastards handed me a binder of rules and requirements designed to test whether the pack should even recognize me as a candidate. Charity events. Community work. Studying the full body of work Emris already completed as Alpha.

I growled internally because I genuinely believed there was no way that Emris did all of that good bloody work but I was wrong. They had photographs. Documentation. Proof that Emris was establishing himself as the legitimate heir of the Alpha seat years before any of this started.

And then there was the constitution.

I’d read the parts directly concerning succession rights. Now I’m expected to absorb five thousand additional clauseselder law, Delta laws, territory laws, generations of precedent and that’s only half of the total document.

It made sense that the pack needed to recognize me first. Because according to Demetra, if the pack didn’t formally recognize me first, my taking the seat would read as insurrection and every Delta in the territory would rise against me simultaneously. I’d be ruling from fear of what wolf is gonna claw me in my sleep.

I want to be seen as the true Alpha. Right now, I have the barbarian wolves to intimidate the Covenant pack but the barbarian wolves aren’t gonna back me forever especially when I’ve not paid Radius for the cost of his

army.

I promised Radius that we are going to merge our packs.

So for a whole month, I’ve pretended to stare at Demetra like I didn’t want to touch her. Hug her. Make her fall in love with me or something. But that Monroe is always right behind her….even in the pack house, even in her damn room which apparently has its own separate security code that should belong to me once I’m Alpha.

Even that tall daft Monroe himself would bow to me.

Fucking Laura has stopped messaging me. I have no idea where Emris is. Neither I nor Radius know where that bastard of a fucking trybrid Laura is. He should have never involved her. I should have never involved her if I knew she was going to stand in my plan as a lovesick puppy.

The more days that pass that Emris is not out there, the more horrible my chances of becoming Alpha are. Demetra’s pups are now nowhere to be found. I should have kept my eye on those. But I didn’t. And now the only thing I have on her is her thinking that I have Emris when really, I do not.

Two months.

I’m sick of this. I throw off the large constitution, and it hits a surface.

Oh no.” Radius comes in with two glasses of whiskey. There you are, sulking. You might as well go back to breastfeeding.

But I know why he’s here! He’s trying to remind me that his army has a time frame. And without the number of Barbarian wolves behind me, the Covenant Pack would overpower me. One Lycan against thousands of Black Covenant wolves? Yeah, that’s another word for hell.

I’m gonna be Alpha soon.I tap the table multiple times.

Oh now, Lake. That big tit little Luna is playing you like a doll.”

I glare.

She’s too broken and frightened to think straight-

That’s what she wants you to be thinking!Radius growls, the impatient motherfucker. She took her kids somewhere you cannot find them, and you truly think she’s a broken little thing?

I clench my jaw.

One month of what? Reading a fucking constitution and helping communities fill sand in potholes because you wanna be Alpha? The elders have you doing chores all over West Virginia. The pack members of the Black Covenant Pack are calling you a Barbarian Lycan and they don’t want you as Alpha even after your damn press conference.”

I get up, and the chair falls off behind me in anger.

Calm down, Lake.Mom says from the corner.

No! The calming down is gonna get him nothing! I came here with my army so you can have your lovely fantasy with the whitehaired Luna and take your rightful pack. I brought my most loyal wolves and I’ll have to return to my own territory if you’re not prepared to hand over half the Covenant Pack’s land immediately.

Radius beats his chest, his eyes wild. He wants the modern infrastructure, black covenant air and not apocalypse 2.0. He wants the city access, the developed land that comes with a pack like this one. His wolves didn’t follow him here out of any shitty loyalty. They followed him because they’re tired of the cramped territory back home and they want what Virginia offers.

The Black Covenant Pack has millions and millions of acres of land that pack members are not on yet. Open space for hundred thousands of wolves to live there, done living off in Barbarian territory that’s becoming cooped. He wants a share of that cake and that’s the other part of his very expensive price that I promised

him.
