Laura was nowhere to be found when I sent Monroe to detain her. It settled everything…showing that everything we assumed was exactly right. It’s been two months, and I have no idea how I’ve been able to get to keep existing through it.
The library door opens hard and Silver comes in.
I don’t sit up right away. I’m stretched out on the outdoor couch and eventually I open my eyes and find the most devastated expression I’ve ever seen on his face
“What is it?” I sit up.
“Lake is here. With the Barbarian wolves.”
“What?” I whisper.
Lake has been doing whatever we wanted him to do since I told him those were the rules to becoming Alpha laid down by the elders. And after he completed them, he could bond with me. He has been quiet and off my back…until this. The way Silver is saying this sounds like it’s a huge deal, but he’s not trying to frighten me. He and Emris really have that similarity.
“How many?”
“It doesn’t matter. We have to get you out of the pack house first-”
“Silver! Are you crazy?”
“Listen to me first-”
“I’m not leaving. How many are they? Why are you looking like that like there are a thousand Barbarian wolves outside the pack house!?”
“There are a thousand wolves outside the pack house. And if you continue arguing with me, I’m going to throw you over my shoulder and get you out of here!”
“Silver, no.” I move away from him. “Silver, stop.”
I get away from him and try to think as fast as I can. If I leave or if he extracts me out of here, the Zetas and Deltas left behind will engage the barbarian wolves directly. There’s no diplomatic conversation available in that scenario…our Deltas are already been on the heat because rumors have been spreading through the cadres of the Barbarian wolves being the reason for Emris’s death before I even let out an official speech.
“If I leave, you are going to fight with them-”
“And we’re going to win!”
“No, we’re not. We may win the war but the battle will bleeds us because have everything to lose. The

Barbarian wolves do not even have worth for their own lives….talkless of ours. They’ll destroy and keep going. Our Deltas are someone’s sister, fathers and brothers, people who just finished college believing this pack house was the safest place in the territory. These are families, Silver. I’m not putting them against barbarian lunatics in an open fight.”
“He is here to bond you, Demetra.” Silver’s voice cracks. “You think I’ll let a day come where I see you bonded to that bastard?”
“Let him come! Let him think he’s here to bond me. Then you and Monroe end him for good. He has to come in alone.”
Silver thinks about it.
It’s the better play. Take Lake out the moment he separates from his numbers, while he still believes we think he holds the only information about Emris’s whereabouts. That’s his actual weakness…not the army at the gate, but his confidence that we still need him.
“I’ll go to the gate and hear what he wants to say.” I look at Silver. “Shall we?”
We come out thirty minutes later, after Silver has moved through every Delta line passing word of exactly what’s going to happen to Lake the moment we bring him inside alone.
When I step outside, backup exclusive Zetas are already positioned and the sun is directly in my face. But it’s not so bright enough that I see Radius near the front of the formation before we’ve even reached the gate.
“Let only Lake through.” I say it to Jupiter and silence falls across the line as we walk forward.
The moment Jupiter goes over to talk to Lake, the Barbarian wolves start laughing. I stare at their numbers and look at Lake when he starts walking toward me.
I wait until he’s close enough and he speaks before I do.
“I’ve been patient for two months, Demetra. I can’t be patient anymore! If you don’t bond with me within the next ten minutes, the Barbarian wolves I have will infiltrate every section of your territory. Yeah, they may have a hard time doing so, but I promise you, they will definitely be able to take hurt pack members. After all, you all got the heaviest population.”
Lake tilts his head. “We’re thinking schools. Malls. If I cannot get your pups, I’ll get others. You can bond with me without that bloodshed. But if you waste my time, you will still end up bonding with me…along with the bloodshed. Your choice!”
“Why are you doing this?” I ask, even when I don’t care to ask. If I go straight into it without showing emotion, he may think I have something up my sleeve. Rather I just want him to see me as the broken Luna as he walks into the pack without his guards up.
“I want the Alpha seat, Demetra. Please don’t make this hard for me.” He comes closer and Monroe puts a hand out to stop him from closing the gap further. “Emris cannot be recovered. Since he can’t be replaced, accept me instead. I am not like Radius. I would never wanted to harm your children, but they’re standing between your decision and the inevitable. I promise to be a gentle mate-
“Please don’t.” I say with glassy eyes.

“Bond with me right now and no Gamma, no Delta, no member of this pack who has nothing to do with this feud gets hurt. This is your sacrifice as Luna. I believe Emris will understand that.”
Damn bastard.
I keep my eyes sharp and nod at Monroe.
“Tell the elders there will be a bonding ceremony.” I say.
Radius start laughing loud. All the Barbarian wolves are doing the same as they them press forward but the Zetas bare their claws in response, holding the boundary. Lake watches that and turns back to me.
“It’s a bonding ceremony, not a war zone.” I lift my chin. “I don’t need Barbarian bastards in my pack house.”
“I’d like to have Radius witness it.” Lake says.
“Only him.” I agree and Radius raises both fists into the air and yells at the top of his lungs.
“We’re gonna show these bastards how to party the Barbarian way! We’re gonna fuck every she–wolf in this pack until they forget their dead Alpha’s name! We’re gonna paint these walls and make their women scream our names instead!” He howls. “By the time we’re done, this pack won’t even remember they had an Alpha before Lake!”
The Barbarian wolves start howling back and forth. That’s the moment I start walking back into the pack house.
By the time we’re inside, Silver has already ordered the bonding to take place in the largest open floor of the house…as we wait for the elders who conduct marriage rites to arrive and perform what’s required. Derisha catches my eye and nods once, which means she has been told what is about to happen here.
It’s good that Radius came in with Lake, they can both meet in hell.
The barbarian wolves outside don’t know the pack house is fully soundproofed. Whatever happens inside these walls will not reach them until my gammas walk back out with pumping hearts. They will be given one chance and one chance alone at that point: fight or go back to where they came from.
