“Go Ice WATCHERS!”

The girls cheer outside as I watch Emris carry both sleeping kids on his shoulders into the house. I would go in and tuck them in right now but Sabrina is having cold feet and she needs us here telling her that tomorrow is going to go exactly right. Slade is going to remain Slade. She’s going to remain Sabrina. And very soon she’l be Luna of the Lion Pride Pack.

We’ve been doing that for forty minutes now.

Craig and Timothy walk towards us.

“Thank you guys for coming.” Craig kisses me on the cheek, and I hug Timothy too.

“You guys played so well. Teddy has a video of Milo looking star-struck. You think both of you can give him lessons when he’s like ten?” I ask.

“Ugh so swweet.” Tiffany says and they ruffle her hair on the way past.

“You see? They already love you.” I look at Sabrina and she exhales. She knows my family loves hers. It just helps to be reminded over and over. Tomorrow the elders come. Important pack members. It stops being boyfriend and girlfriend and the full weight of what being Luna actually means to real people… she’ll feel that

for the first time.

“We all have to wake up sharp. We should go sleep.” Teddy looks around. “I think all the guests have gone to their separate wings, including… what’s the handsome Alpha’s name?”

“Tyson.” Tiffany says immediately.

“Okay, I’m gonna go get some sleep.” Wren says, and we nod except for Tiffany who stares at her like she suspects something.

“You thinking what I’m thinking?” Teddy looks at Tiffany, and now that I think about it, these two are kind of birds of the same feather.

“What are both of you thinking?” I ask.

“Wren and Seth.”

“What!?” Sabrina blinks.

“They sat together. Look, I even have it in my video… they were holding hands for some reason.” Teddy shows us, and we all poke our heads in a crowd circle to look at the phone.

“Oh wow.” Sabrina says. “But why am I not shocked? They are both dorks, of course I see why they would click.”

I’m so shocked I don’t know what to say. But mostly I’m glad Wren is chasing something other than Travis.

“Sabrina.” I take her hands. “You more than anyone need to be asleep right now. Go to your bridal villa, run a warm bath, order tea from the call line, and fall asleep knowing that my brother loves you completely and ha no one else in his heart. Slade is the most patient person I know. He’s kind. He’s empathetic. And he’s gonna make such a great husband, just as he’s made a great Alpha.” I squeeze her hand. “I love you, Sabrina.

“We love you.” Tiffany adds, and we all do a group hug, laughing loudly when the whole pack house is already so quiet because everyone has gone to their separate rooms.

I’m still smiling when I push open the kids’ room door.

The smile stays until I see Emris.

Sleeves rolled up, the short hair at his scalp slightly damp, two children in fresh clothes that are completely different from what they wore to the hockey game. Amira’s hair is in a towel as she’s asleep on the pillow.

And Emris picking up toys from the floor in that daddy state, and my breath just dies somewhere.

Hormones. Call it whatever. But this wolf is fine as fine can be. Does he know how attractive he looks right now in his raw, tired, stay-at-home Alpha whatever he’s got going on? I’m staring at him so bad it’s embarrassing because Emris and I are not on good terms. That back of his that can carry all of our little family and not be tired. Emris faces me, and I blink back to serious.

“Gave them a bath. Amira spilled juice on Milo, and Milo put her gum on her head-”

“What?” I say, staring at my poor baby. I thought she was getting princess treatment so that’s why he towel. I quickly stop standing at the door and step my feet on the rug to their bed.

I pull the towel on Amira’s head down to see if she has any hair left.

“I got it out.” Emris says while I’m checking, and I lift myself.

“It just had to be gum when she’s literally a flower girl tomorrow.”

Emris raises one cheek and smiles. Does he even find that funny? I’ll never know.

“I already took a shower before leaving, so I’m going straight to bed.” I start walking out, visibly feeling the tense energy between the both of us.

“How are you feeling?” Emris asks, and I look over my shoulder. Oh. He means the pregnancy.

“Alright.”

“You forgot to take your prenatal when you left the pack. I put it in your drawer. He says, and I feel my heart plunge quietly as he says that. I stare at his lips, pretending that it’s not making me feel butterflies all over again like the mate bond just snapped into place.

“Thank you.”

I walk out of the kids’ room and make it to mine. Room service already got in here, so the bed is freshly made and all the stuff I did in the closet is already arranged back to normal. I notice Emris’s gym bag in there. I hear the door open and close behind me and catch his scent settling into the room as I change out of my clothes and into a silk nightwear that flows loose and free. I pop the prenatals into my mouth and swallow them with the water on the bedside table then get comfortable against the pillows.

As I get comfy, and I can hear the shower going on.

I keep my eyes open until the water turns off, and I wait for Emris to come out. When he comes out, he’s shirtless but wearing a pair of joggers as he joins me in the dim room. I can pick him out of the darkness, and I stare at his beautiful body…mesmerization filling me up like I’ve never seen this wolf before.

I turn to the other side of the bed and feel his weight on the bed. There’s silence between us for a moment, but he breaks it softly.

“We need to talk.”

“About?” I stare at the moonlight coming through the curtains.

“About us.”

“What about us?”

“About why Laura is still here.” He says it and I shift to stare at the ceiling instead of him.

“I need the shapeshifter. The one who worked alongside Lake Covenant. I gave Laura the position of Delta so she can bring the shapeshifter to me.”

“So… what next?” I can’t help but sound annoyed. I even push myself up from the pillow. “Will you give Laura Hale a badge of honor next for finding the shapeshifter?”

“No.” Emris says. Ariadne is one thread into something bigger. You said she was with Laura the day you went to question her… which means Laura maintained contact with her even after everything that happened to me.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

He exhales like the wolf he is.

“I believe Lake and Ariadne fooled Laura about what the compulsion was supposed to do. She wanted me compelled toward her…to have feeling for her. But Ariadne, Lake and Radius had different plans entirely. When it fell apart I think Laura realized she’d been used. But for some reason she still needed Ariadne close.”

“Ariadne is the one who told Laura about the Sahara Den.” He says seriously, sternly and I sit with that

Okay, and if Ariadne told her about the Sahara Den, what does it matter? It makes sense that Radius, being the kind of depraved bastard he was, would know about something as disgusting as a den like that. So yes, it makes sense. But that’s where my understanding ends.

“I need to close the Den.” Emris says.

“Close the Den.” I repeat slowly. “What does that even mean?”

Emris raises his body from the pillows, and I just know whatever is about to say next is the real deal. The real reason why Laura is still here. The reason he hasn’t said any of this until now.

If Emris hasn’t told me it’s because it’s dangerous. And he knows that me being pregnant, our kids, our family just coming back together…the last thing I want to hear on this damn earth is that he’s doing something dangerous….especially now that we just got him back.

“I saw-”

“Don’t tell me.” I cut him off fast.

“Demetra-”

“Get up.” My voice shakes. “Get to the couch. I don’t want you in the same bed as me.”

“I don’t want you to ever call me that either!” I swallow, because I can feel tears pulling in my lungs and in my chest, and I can already feel myself crying.

“Let me explain—”

“I said no! Cause you’re looking at your Luna who held this pack together alone for months. I was on my own. With internal attacks, with threats in the pack, Emris. I had to send the kids away even when every part of them wanted them right next to me. People announced your death everywhere. And now the kids have their father back and you’re sitting here telling me you’re about to risk that again. Look at your body. Look at the scars on your body!”
