When We Were Mates (Demetra and Emris) novel Chapter 245

Alpha Emris.

:

“Where’s Demetra?” I ask the driver in the parking spot where both Alpha Tyson and Demetra are supposed

to be.

“Sir, Luna Demetra got out of the car to get… a cotton candy.”

“Excuse me?” I feel the growl before I decide to produce it and the Lion Pride Gamma takes a full step back.

“She went with Tyson?” Silver’s hand finds my wrist. “Calm down, Silverback.”

The boys knew I wanted to intervene the moment Demetra offered to share a car with him. From what I caught of their conversation it read like business.

Problem is…if anyone can remember that I was a jerk in high school, they can remember that Tyson was the same side of the coin. Silver mentioned Silverback because that’s exactly what Tyson is… a were gorilla, a true silverback, and a proud one at that. I didn’t hate him back then. We just looked at each other across hallways and understood the landscape. Both our fathers died around the same period. We both became Alphas around the same time.

He was close with Slade back then so there was never a reason to speak.

We would look past each other in the busy night clubs downtown, each of us knowing exactly what the other was. Too dangerous to be enemies. Too proud to be friends so we never spoke. As apex predators, we never needed to.

Maybe this is the time to stir that water up.

“Where?” I feel my neck go up.

“The stalls over there.” The driver points toward a cluster of lights and noise. And a bunch of people.

“Emris.” Slade puts both hands on my chest. “Don’t be rash.”

“He’s with Demetra.”

“And Demetra is your Luna. That means nothing is happening. You are already on thin ice with her….the absolute last thing you’re going to do right now is behave like a jealous maniac.”

I don’t spare Slade a glance anymore. It’s because he can see Sabrina from over here chuckling so that’s why he can afford to be relaxed, speak without his chest going up and down. I take the road the driver pointed and Silver, Abel and Jaguar fall in behind me on my mark.

I get to the center market where everything is lit up, and I try to get a scent of her. Amidst the lanterns. I don’t have the patience for the conventional way of searching. So I blank the entire crowd and let my wolf work. He blanks everything blue.

My wolf will blank Demetra in red when he spots her, so I just move until I see the single red she-wolf around a gathered crowd.

Chapter 245

“Demi!” I growl her name, and she faces me quick.

I stalk and before I can even say something–

“I apologize.” I hear Tyson say. Didn’t realize he was there until the moment he spoke.

“I’m the one who wanted cotton candy.” Demetra asys. “Why are you apologizing? Why do any of us have to apologize? We are not doing anything wrong.” She answers stubbornly, like she’s already made up something in her mind about me.

“Shall we?” She asks Tyson, and he nods. With that, they walk away at the same time, and I’m left standing there like a common idiot.

“Oh shit.” Silver contributes helpfully.

Then the crowd splits with a sharp scream and Laura staggers out from the middle of it… breathing hard, scanning left and right. Then she looks down at her feet which is crooked, bent in fact at an angle that feet don’t naturally achieve. She looks down at it, pops it back into alignment against her knees, and growls out so aggressively her canines fully extend.

“What the hell is in the air?” Silver says again.

Laura looks at me, about to say my name, when I walk away to follow Demetra.

I’m right at Demetra and Tyson’s back as they walk across the grass to the stadium, and my eyes sharpen at the coat she’s wearing. Demetra didn’t come out of the house with any coat. I intentionally went back in to grab one for her from her closet, along with grabbing some for the kids. The structure of the coat from the back looks like a male.

My wolf stretches my eyeballs sideways toward Tyson and confirms what I already know.

This silverback gave her his coat!

I feel my hand go out, but I use my other arm to grab it back. I’m already on thin ice with Demetra with the Laura thing, and the last thing I need is to give us more reason to argue when we’ve not organized our communication well enough.

I know what unresolved arguments do over time in a relationship, and unfortunately, I’ve dug enough holes for someone to get between us. Worse, these single bastards don’t see a pregnant she-wolf has a limitation.

They don’t see pups, mates, or distance to get what they want.

Right now, my wolf is snarling, clawing at my insides, demanding I do something, anything, to remind every single soul in this crowd who she belongs to. Possessiveness runs hot up my spine like something caught fire at the base of it. My Lycan surfaces. My Vampyr stirs. Rust sits in my sternum growling at a frequency that doesn’t reach sound but vibrates in every bone.

My jaw is locked so tight I can feel my teeth grinding. And yet, I can’t do a damn thing.

I watch Demetra look sideways at Alpha Tyson, and chuckle.

Chapter 245

Her face goes pink at the cheeks and she laughs the way “she laughs “when something actually got her. Hear tilting slightly, nose going just barely red. I haven’t made her laugh like that in months.

Before I was Alpha and our relationship was a secret and I was a scumbag, I still got her to laugh. I wouldn’t let her leave my room, I’d say anything, invent scenarios just to keep her there long enough to hear that laugh until her nose turned red.

A weregorilla in a snug shirt is currently doing that job.

How bad has it gotten that I haven’t seen her laugh like that in months? We’re a family now with kids, another one coming yet somehow we’re more distant than we were when we were hiding what we were to each other.

“No way!” She says, all her attention on Tyson while I’m right behind them.

I don’t know what the fuck shit this fuck shit is saying next to her, but I’m gonna hold it in. The worst thing you can do is let a bastard know you feel threatened by him because then he’ll feel he has a chance.

No wolf in this territory should feel like they have a shot at anything that belongs to me. Especially not in my Luna. So I…I guess I try to play unbothered man with nothing to fear but I’m sweating. My chest is sweating My hands are fisting and unfisting. There’s a bitter taste in my mouth that wants to crack a skull or two.

We get to the stadiums, and I watch them sit next to each other… again!!!!!

AGAIN!?

I don’t realize how bad my fingers are shaking on my knees until Teddy starts taking a family video of me and aims the camera to my hands. I glare, and she takes the pictures anyway and shows them to Eden.

I focus back on Demetra who’s moving her hair off her back… it’s falling everywhere tonight and I can imagine her hair is gonna get harder for her to take care of once it gets to the second trimester.

Tyson is saying something about her hair now.

It’s supposed to be cold here. I already gave the kids their sweaters, but out of everyone, I’m feeling heat like I’m back at the Sahara Den. Complete and thirsty heat that I feel in my chest, rolling against my abs.

I see Tyson point toward the hockey rink where the players are flying across the ice, sticks clashing, pucks sliding and bodies slamming into the boards. The crowd roars every time a player gets close to the goal. Demetra doesn’t watch sports, and if I remember correctly, Tyson played hockey in high school, so I’m guessing he’s telling her what’s going on.

I hear myself hiss, and Alpha Seth looks at me.

“He’s not gonna take her away from you, Emris.”

“Well, she’s not seated next to me, is she?” I answer it back.

“You guys are having issues?”

“No, of course not.” I lie.

Someone scores on the ice rink, and everyone gets up in total screaming…so loud, the whole stadium shudders. And I’m there, pissed, watching Demetra’s hand go into a bag of chips and into her mouth. I wanna be the one seated next to her so bad, you can’t understand how much I want that.

I literally hear myself exhale each time I stare and that’s every second. I can’t stop looking.

Neptunes screwing bastard, I can’t stop.

Two hours into the game, and there’s nothing I can do but watch Demetra interact, jump up with Alpha Tyson, cheer at the games, look right to her girlfriends, chuckling, hear her laughter, and have no idea what she’s laughing about.

“Dada!”

I hear Amira’s crying voice somewhere to my right, and I raise myself, making Alpha Ronin pass her from the rest of the rows until she gets to me.

“Sshh Sssh.” I settle her against my chest and pat her back slowly until the crying stops and she falls asleep there. Though as the game commences, the noise is waking her up and making her cranky.

At this point, I might as well just take the kids home so they can go to bed. Fortunately, the game comes to an end, and I see Craig growl against the rink in victory because his team, the Ice Watchers, secured the win. I end up getting Milo from Aunt Allison, who’s also sleeping.

I get to my feet with both of them.

Demetra gets up to adjust Amira’s sleepy head against my shoulder, and she doesn’t even look at my face. I’m literally begging without words. I’ve never had to stare at her for more than two seconds before she realizes that I’m doing so. We always hold eye contact…even when we’re fighting. So why isn’t she—

“Look at me, Demetra!” I growl and push through the mate bond directly.
