Whispers Turn to Whimpers: Could He Ever Change? novel Chapter 1275

With a huff, Jenna turned her little body away, presenting Gilbert with the back of her head.

Gilbert froze, the smile instantly stiffening on his face. She was clearly still angry with him.

"Jenna?" Nanson, not understanding the situation, leaned down and asked, "What's wrong? Why are you unhappy?"

"Uncle," Jenna said in her sweet little voice, "I'm hungry."

"Jenna!" James had reached them by now, standing on his tiptoes. "Big brother brought you snacks! There's blueberry cake and strawberry milk!" They were all of Jenna's favorites.

Jenna looked down, her big eyes sparkling. Her lashes were slightly damp. "Thank you, brother." Her voice trembled with a hint of a sob as she spoke.

Gilbert's brow furrowed. This was all his fault. He had made Jenna so sad… He was a terrible father.

"You're welcome," James said, playing the part of the responsible older brother. He held out his hand. "Come on, Jenna, let's go sit over there and eat."

"Okay!"

Nanson bent down and gently placed Jenna on the ground, patting her head. "Go with your brother."

"Uh-huh."

James took his sister's small hand in his, and the two little ones walked over to the children's chairs that had been set up for them. Gilbert and Nanson exchanged a look and quietly followed behind.

"Mr. Harrison," Nanson said with a slight nod, offering an explanation. "Sherilyn is busy, so she asked me to look after Jenna for a while."

"I see," Gilbert nodded, his tone flat. "Thank you." As Jenna's biological father, the thanks was appropriate, yet Nanson detected a hint of hostility in those two words. It seemed Mr. Harrison still had unresolved feelings for Sherilyn.

Nanson simply smiled warmly, keeping his expression neutral. "You're welcome."

Francis's expression softened slightly, his brow furrowed in a sigh. "I know it hurts, but isn't this what you chose? To let her go?"

"Yeah," Gilbert said, a bitter smile twisting his lips. "I'm the one who let her go… I knew it would be hard, but living through it is so much worse than I ever imagined."

He took a ragged breath. "Francis, Sherilyn already has someone else in her life… that Nanson guy. I tried to find a cemetery plot for Sherilyn, but he beat me to it. Today, he was the one holding Jenna, but I'm her father."

His voice broke.

"Sherilyn doesn't need me anymore… and neither does Jenna!"

"Gilbert…"

Standing inside, Sherilyn didn't register what Francis said next. So, it was true. She hadn't been overthinking it. The notification Galen received about the other cemetery plot had been arranged by Gilbert.
