Whispers Turn to Whimpers: Could He Ever Change? novel Chapter 1290

Sherilyn's voice rose to a shout. "I said stop crying! Do you hear me?"

Her sharp tone seemed to work. Gilbert hiccupped, forcefully stifling his sobs. He looked at her, wanting to cry but not daring to, his expression utterly pitiful.

"Now that you've stopped, go clean yourself up! I'll call Charles back in..." she said, moving to stand up again.

"Sherilyn!" Gilbert grabbed her again, though this time he didn't dare touch her skin, only clutching the hem of her shirt.

Sherilyn frowned and whipped her head around, ready to snap, "Are you ever going to stop..."

"Is he... good to you?"

His question caught her off guard. What was he asking? But she quickly understood. 'He' meant Nanson. A bitter laugh escaped her lips. Candida must have told him. She was his person, after all; it was only natural that he knew what was going on in her life. Sherilyn hadn't exposed it, hadn't made a scene. She had thought that if she just let it be, his feelings would eventually fade. She never expected that while she remained calm, he would be the one to cause a scene. Was his old possessiveness flaring up again? The inability to tolerate any man getting even slightly close to her?

"Gilbert," Sherilyn said his name slowly, looking into his red-rimmed eyes with a mixture of resentment and helplessness. "Life is long. There will always... be other people in it." She scoffed. "Did you really think I would be alone forever?" While she had no plans to find someone new right now, she certainly had no intention of staying single for the rest of her life just because of her failed past with him.

Sherilyn looked away. "I don't want to answer."

"You don't want to answer?" Gilbert repeated her words, then suddenly laughed. "Or you don't dare to answer? Look at me! Why won't you look at me? It's because you never liked me at all! That's why you can move on so quickly... isn't it? Sherilyn, look at me! Answer me!"

His relentless questions finally provoked her. "Fine!" Sherilyn's head snapped up, her eyes meeting his. "I have nothing to be afraid of. The only reason I didn't want to answer is out of respect for how you took care of me and Jenna this past year! Why do you have to force me?" She took a deep breath, her words coming out slow, clear, and deliberate. "Listen carefully. I loved you once, deeply. But that was five years ago. Ever since I came back to Sunhaven, ever since we got back together..."

"I never loved you. Not once. Not again!"
