The smile on her lips deepened. "If a day isn't enough, try a month. If a month isn't enough, try a year. Eventually, it will pass. One day, you'll let it all go. The love you once felt will fade with time and disappear completely."
"Sherilyn..." Gilbert looked at her, wanting to tell her that he could never forget her, not in this lifetime. But the words wouldn't come out. All he could do was shake his head.
"Sherilyn..." he whispered her name, his eyes filling with tears as he kept shaking his head.
Seeing him like this, Sherilyn believed that he did, in fact, love her. At least, in this moment.
"Thank you," she said, a genuine smile breaking through as her eyes grew misty. "Thank you for loving me. Even if it came many years too late." She blinked. "But at least... it happened."
She started backing away as she spoke. "I'm leaving now. I'll send Charles in."
She turned abruptly and left the bathroom.
"Sherilyn!" Gilbert's low, strained roar followed her. It wasn't loud, but it carried a hysterical, piercing quality.
Sherilyn squeezed her eyes shut and quickened her pace, practically running out of the room.
"Sherilyn." Candida and Charles, who had been waiting by the door, immediately straightened up.
Sherilyn glanced at Charles. "You should go in. It's not safe for him to be alone." With that, she bolted.
Candida and Charles exchanged a quick look. One rushed into the room while the other chased after her.
"Sherilyn!" Candida caught up to her at the elevators. Sherilyn was standing there, mashing the call button over and over again.
"Sherilyn?" Candida approached, frowning. "You've already pressed it." There was no need to keep pressing.
"Right," Sherilyn murmured, stopping the motion but leaving her finger resting on the button as if she'd forgotten it was there. She closed her eyes, and all she could see was Gilbert's tear-streaked face.
