At the sound of the voice, Gilbert and Charles both looked up to see a familiar face: Callie Robinson, whom they hadn't seen in ages.
Gilbert's brow furrowed instantly. The sight of her was an immediate annoyance; the woman was unbelievably persistent. "What's it to you?" he snapped, getting to his feet and heading towards the restroom.
"Hey!" Callie scrambled after him, grabbing his arm. "Don't go! You haven't answered my question!"
"I'm not answering it!" Gilbert said, his patience worn thin. "I already told you, it's none of your business!" He shook her off and disappeared into the men's room. No matter how clingy she was, surely she wouldn't follow him in there.
"Hmph..." Callie pouted in frustration. She couldn't go in, but she didn't leave, choosing instead to stand guard right outside the door.
When Gilbert emerged, she spread her arms, blocking his path completely.
"Tch!" Gilbert was at his wit's end. "What in the world do you want?"
"You're sick!" Callie tilted her chin up, looking at him defiantly. "I heard everything! You're sick! And it's serious!"
"Hah," Gilbert scoffed. "You heard wrong."
"Did I?" Callie's eyes narrowed shrewdly. Then, out of the blue, she declared, "I want to be your girlfriend!"
Gilbert stopped short, his eyes hardening. "You're the one who's sick!" he sneered. "If you're sick, go see a doctor! Stop bothering me!"
Tentatively, she lowered her voice. "I'm not asking you to marry me right away... just, can you stop chasing me away every time you see me? Please?" As she spoke, she flashed him a sycophantic little smile.
Staring at Callie's perfectly made-up face, Gilbert let out a nearly inaudible, humorless chuckle. He had no desire to play games with her, but he couldn't refuse. His illness had to remain a secret from his siblings, unless he was literally on his deathbed.
After a moment's thought, Gilbert raised his hand, pushed Callie's arm aside, and said in a cold, clear voice, "You've got some nerve." He walked past her without another word.
"Huh?" Callie was stunned for a second, but then she understood. A wide grin spread across her face as she hurried to catch up with him. "Does that mean you agree? Right?" she asked, seeking confirmation.
Gilbert's face remained a cold mask, and he didn't utter a single word in reply.
