"Yeah." Francis's voice came through the line, heavy with exhaustion and a trace of helplessness.
Having been brothers for years, Gilbert knew him too well.
His heart sank. "Is it bad?"
"It is..."
Francis let out a long, defeated sigh. "The doctors suspect it's... bone cancer."
What??
Gilbert's eyes widened in shock, his grip tightening around his phone.
Was it really that serious?
He remained silent for a moment before asking, "Are the test results back?"
"Not yet."
Francis shook his head. "This is just their preliminary diagnosis. They've scheduled detailed scans, and we won't know for sure until the results come back."
"Francis..."
Gilbert paused, his throat tight. "So there's still a chance they're wrong..."
That was technically true.
But Francis only sighed. "The doctors said she's been in so much pain the last two days that she can't sleep at all... At first, they thought it was just hysteria."
As his words fell, a heavy silence settled between the brothers.
It took a long while before Francis finally spoke again. "I'm going to go check on her. You should get some rest."
"...Alright."
Gilbert agreed and hung up the phone.
His brow remained deeply furrowed as he clutched the device in his palm.
During the call, neither of them had said it out loud, but both brothers knew the unspoken truth.
If the diagnosis was confirmed...
Caroline Bennett probably wouldn't make it.
Meanwhile.
Francis slipped his phone back into his pocket and made his way to Caroline's courtyard.
"Mr. Johnson." Her private nurse, Josie, opened the door for him.
"Yeah," Francis nodded, getting straight to the point. "How is she?"
He didn't need Josie to answer because he could already hear it.
From inside the bedroom, the sound of quiet sobbing echoed through the hall.
"Sigh..."
The nurse frowned sympathetically. "She was fine during the day, but once night fell, the pain flared up again. Ms. Bennett has been crying non-stop..."
Francis furrowed his brows. "Did she not take her medication?"
