After lunch, the group headed to the cinema to catch a movie.
Zoe took charge of buying the tickets and popcorn.
Getting the tickets was easy enough, but the concession stand posed a logistical nightmare.
The popcorn only came in two sizes: a "Couple's Combo" or a single serving.
She and Fred obviously needed a Couple's Combo. But as for the other three...
Sloane and Logan might have been in the middle of a cold war, but they were still legally husband and wife.
And Landon...
Whatever. She decided to buy two Couple's Combos and one single serving, letting them sort out the awkward math themselves.
The moment Zoe grabbed the first combo, Logan smoothly stepped up and claimed the second one.
He handed the second cup of soda to Sloane. "Here."
Sloane hesitated for a split second before taking it.
Once she accepted the drink, Landon was left with no choice but to take the lonely, single-serving popcorn and soda.
Landon shot Logan a subtle, murderous glare.
The movie began.
It was a romance film adapted from a world-famous classic. Zoe had read the original novel ages ago and had cried her eyes out over the emotional turmoil, which was why she had hyped it up so much to the group.
But the brilliance of the novel didn't translate to the screen.
Instead of capturing the complex, agonizing push-and-pull of the characters, the director had stuffed the film with endless monologues and lingering, static landscape shots. The pacing was excruciatingly slow.
Zoe leaned over and whispered her complaints to Fred. "What a garbage adaptation. It feels like I'm watching a PowerPoint presentation. It's just a mess of pretentious, empty shots."
Sitting next to Logan, Sloane managed to force herself through the opening conflict before her eyelids grew dangerously heavy. Her consciousness began to blur. Operating on pure muscle memory, she reached down toward the shared popcorn bucket between them, hoping a snack would keep her awake.
But the moment her fingertips brushed the rim of the bucket, they collided with another large, warm hand that had reached in at the exact same time.
