Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 239

Sloane gripped the freshly signed discharge report, her steps light as she made her way toward Danielle's room.

Before she even reached the door, she noticed it was tightly shut. Standing at rigid attention on either side of the entrance were two soldiers in full uniform. The insignia gleaming on their shoulders under the harsh fluorescent lights made it immediately obvious they were high-ranking guards.

As she approached, one of the guards stepped forward, blocking her path with an outstretched arm. His tone was respectful but carried an undeniable, hardened authority. "Are you a doctor? Our General is inside speaking with Major Lennox. Please return later."

Sloane froze, realization crashing over her instantly—Danielle's father, the imposing General of the military district, had finally arrived.

She nodded and took two steps back, figuring she would just hand the discharge papers to the guards and leave. But just as she opened her mouth to speak, a booming voice erupted from inside the room. It struck the empty hallway like a tolling bell, every word slicing cleanly into Sloane's ears:

"...Danielle broke down in tears and begged me to swap the names on that Cordovia mission roster. I only have one daughter. Do you think I wanted to send her into a warzone to die? But she was hysterical. She told me Logan Lennox was the only man she would ever love, and she couldn't let you march to your death!

Logan Lennox, search your conscience. The entire military district knows how deeply my daughter loves you. And what did you do? The second she stepped onto the battlefield, you turned around and went straight to the Civil Affairs Bureau to marry some stranger! Is this how you repay the life she bought for you? You've disappointed me immensely!"

The voice carried the crushing weight of decades of command. Every syllable felt like a sledgehammer slamming directly into Sloane's chest. The agonizing pain stole the breath from her lungs, and her fingertips turned ice-cold.

A second later, Logan's voice bled through the door. It was heavy, thick with suppressed emotion, yet utterly unyielding. "General, I admit that I owe Danielle a debt I can never fully repay. I had no idea about the roster swap until now. I will carry the weight of her sacrifice for the rest of my life. If Danielle ever asks, I will gladly lay down my life for her. But my marriage..."

"Bullshit!" The General roared, violently cutting him off.
