Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 240

It took Sloane nearly half an hour to pull herself together. She carefully smoothed out her expression, picked up the discharge report once more, and walked back to Danielle's hospital room.

This time, the intimidating guards were gone. When she pushed open the door, the room was completely empty. The bedsheets were perfectly folded, and Danielle's luggage had completely vanished.

Sloane stood frozen in the doorway. She flagged down a passing nurse and learned that shortly after the General arrived, he ordered his guards to settle all the medical bills. They had escorted Danielle out over thirty minutes ago. Logan had left with them.

Standing in the desolate room, Sloane looked down at the weightless discharge papers in her hand. A massive, hollow void had been carved out of her chest, and even the slightest draft of air sent a chilling ache through her ribs.

Whether someone had intentionally pulled strings behind the scenes, or whether her former hospital genuinely realized how valuable she was, Sloane didn't know.

That afternoon, she received a call from Director Thomas Thorne. "Sloane, the department is desperately short-staffed. Pack your things. We need you back here within the next couple of days!"

Sloane's heart violently seized.

"Didn't the mandate state I had to stay for at least six months?" she asked quietly. "Six months to a year. I've barely been here for two."

"You were never supposed to be sent out on medical support in the first place," Director Thorne explained. "Director York's anger has finally subsided. You can come home."

"Are you sure it's just because Director York isn't angry anymore?" Sloane pressed.

"Well, that's part of it. But I've also been aggressively fighting to get you transferred back. Ever since our hospital's reputation skyrocketed, patients from all over the country—even internationally—have been requesting our department. We literally cannot function without you, Sloane."

Sloane fell silent.

Director Thorne hadn't mentioned anyone specifically pulling strings on her behalf, which meant this was Director Arthur York's official decree.

Was this just fate?
