Chapter 23
In the break room.
Fifteen minutes until the competition. I’d only slept a few hours. I needed coffee.
As I walked in, finding the room empty, Ayla followed, calmly greeting me, “Seren.”
I ignored her. I went straight to the cabinet and took a cup.
Ayla glanced at my hand, slender and delicate, as I pulled open the cabinet door.
My hand, the one that effortlessly created stunning artwork.
Ayla’s eyes turned gloomy slightly. She walked over and also picked up a cup.
I continued ignoring Ayla, walking to make myself a cup of coffee.
As I reached for the carafe, Ayla suddenly pressed the hot water button.
Boiling water erupted. It was aimed directly at my right hand. A severe burn could mean I’d never hold a pen again. Ayla couldn’t help but curl her lips into a smirk.
But the next second, her smile froze. She hadn’t expected my quick reaction. Before the boiling water could touch me, I’d withdrawn my hand. So fast, only a few drops splashed onto my hand.
Ayla instinctively reached out, trying to stop me. She failed again.
I stepped aside, accidentally bumping her shoulder.
Ayla lost her balance, reaching out for support. In her panic, she pressed the hot water button again and knocked over a coffee cup. Boiling water poured directly onto her right hand.
A searing pain shot through her. “Ah!” Ayla screamed, a piercing cry.
It took several seconds before she could turn off the hot water.
Mom.” Willow, who’d appeared at some point, saw Ayla’s scalded hand. She cried out, “Mom!” Then she ran to Lucian, not far away, finding her refuge.
Crying, she called, “Dad… Dad…”
Lucian, who was on the phone, immediately hung up and bent down to pick up Willow whose tears were treaming down her face. “Willow, what’s wrong?”
Dad, Ms. Seren burned Mom’s hand.”
Lucian’s face hardened. He quickly walked towards the break room, holding Willow.
Those who’d gathered to see what was happening froze under Lucian’s gaze. No one dared to approach.
Lucian walked in, Willow in his arms, closing the door behind him.
‘Lucian…” Ayla’s eyes welled up, her voice trembling as she fought back the pain. Her voice was full of grievance.
Lucian looked at me with an icy stare. He quickly moved to Ayla’s side, taking her arm and placing her burned hand under cold water.
