“Elias, take Stella home to rest. She hasn’t slept well,” Jasper said, his voice filled with concern.
“Grandpa, can I stay with you?” Chloe asked.
“You’re just a kid–you can’t stay up late. Come back after school tomorrow,” Jasper replied.
Unable to argue with him, Elias took the children and left.
Alone in the ward, Jasper picked up a sketchpad. With gentle strokes, he drew the girl from his memories -her smile bright and warm.
Shortly after they left, Jaron pushed open the door.
His heart skipped a beat when he saw the familiar face on the sketch.
“Missing Nicole again?” he said softly.
“You’re here,” Jasper replied, setting the sketchpad aside.
Jaron frowned, noticing how much older Jasper looked. “How did the doctor put it?”
“Just a minor injury–nothing to worry about,” Jasper said casually.
But his nonchalant tone only made Jaron uneasy.
“Jasper, it’s been all these years. I’m sure fate sees how sincere you are. You’re getting older–stop going to Silverspine Mountain,” Jaron urged.
“Alright.” Jasper nodded.
Jaron blinked in surprise. “Since when do you listen to me?”
“I promised Stella I wouldn’t go,” Jasper explained.
“That makes sense.” Jaron laughed, handing him a peeled apple. \
“If you need anything, just say so. I’ll do my best to help,” he added.
Jasper paused, looking up at him. “Jaron, if something happens to me… will you-”
“Pfft!” Jaron cut him off sharply. “What nonsense are you talking about?”
He poured a glass of warm water. “Drink this. Rinse your mouth. Let’s pretend you never said that.”
Jasper smiled helplessly and took a sip.
“Jasper, I’ll help out while you’re in the hospital. But for anything else–handle it yourself. Don’t trouble me. You know I’m not reliable,” Jaron said, his voice anxious with worry.
“Here, eat the apple,” he pressed.

“I’m not hungry. Stop peeling,” Jasper said.
Jaron froze, then sighed heavily. “Not many people get to be waited on by me. You should count yourself lucky.”
“I really can’t eat,” Jasper insisted.
Jaron finally stopped, his tone growing somber. “Let her go, Jasper.”
Jasper looked at him.
“Let Nicole rest. It’ll make your life easier,” Jaron said gently.
“I can’t. She’s already taken root in my heart,” Jasper replied.
Jaron’s eyes reddened with sadness.
His memories of Nicole were of a bright, innocent girl–pure and kind.
He could never reconcile that image with the broken Luna Harlow.
Just thinking about it made his chest ache.
“I wish we could go back to high school–back to the days of fooling around, the four of us inseparable like siblings,” Jaron said regretfully.
“But life doesn’t give second chances,” Jasper replied softly.
As memories of Nicole flooded his mind, a faint smile crossed his face.
On the day Jasper was discharged, Stella and Elias came to pick him up personally.
“Dad, don’t worry about work–I’ll handle everything,” Stella said, fearing he’d overwork himself again.
“Okay, I’ll listen to you,” Jasper agreed, not wanting to worry her.
When they got home, Jasper was surprised to find relatives and friends waiting for him.
“Welcome home, Grandpa!” Chloe cheered.
Jasper stroked her head gently.
“Jasper, we’re getting older–we need to take care of ourselves,” Mark said, his voice full of concern.
“I know, Mark.” Jasper nodded.
Nadia looked at him sadly, noticing how much he’d aged. “I brought you some supplements–they’ll help
you recover.”
Jasper thanked her with a nod.

Members of the Cross and Shaw families also came, showering him with care.
Jasper responded to each one warmly.
In the end, only Jasper and Vincent remained in the yard.
“Mr. Shaw, you have something to say?” Jasper asked.
Vincent nodded, his old eyes glistening with tears. “Jasper, thank you for never forgetting Nicole.”
He paused, looking up at the sky, his voice trembling. “Nicole, you chose well.”
“Mr. Shaw, I’ll always feel responsible for Nicole,” Jasper said.
Vincent patted his shoulder. “Jasper, it’s not your fault. I’ve seen everything you’ve done these years–you have nothing to blame yourself for.”
Even though everyone forgave him, Jasper couldn’t forgive himself. He hated that he hadn’t been able to protect the woman he loved.
“You and Nicole were engaged, and you had Stella. If you want… call me Vincent from now on. When I’m gone and see Nicole, I’ll tell her. Her dad approves,” Vincent said, tears streaming down his face.
He’d regretted their petty argument for a lifetime.
Jasper stared at him in shock for a long moment.
Then he laughed through his tears, pouring a cup of coffee. “Vincent, have some coffee.”
“Yes, Jasper,” Vincent replied, his vision blurred as he took the cup.
