Chapter 35 New Job
Chloe paused and glanced over. The voice belonged to a young woman with blunt bangs who looked fresh out of college. She was pretty, dressed professionally in a crisp blazer and skirt.
But… Chloe had no idea who she was.
She finished touching up her makeup and tucked her compact
away.
When Chloe didn’t acknowledge her, the girl rolled her eyes and lazily flipped through the resume in her hands. She seemed completely relaxed, even pulling out her phone occasionally to text friends.
“Number five, Claire Morrison.”
Soon after, the conference room door opened and HR called out.
The girl who had rolled her eyes at Chloe stood up confidently and walked in. Within minutes, she emerged from the room with HR following behind.
Chloe checked the time—from entry to exit, it had taken less than six minutes.
“Go home and wait for our call. We’ll notify you as soon as we have results,” HR told Claire.

“Sounds good! And please tell my cousin to come by for dinner. My mom really misses her.” Claire winked.
“Will do.”
HR called out again. “Number six, Chloe Shaw.”
Chloe stood and walked toward the conference room. As she passed Claire, she caught the faint sound of a mocking snort.
She paid it no mind, taking her resume and following HR into the conference room.
Three interviewers were waiting-two women and a man. The room had an uncomfortable tension to it.
Chloe handed over her resume and introduced herself
“Chloe…”
The woman in the middle had a sharp bob and attractive features similar to Claire’s.
She looked up, her piercing gaze fixed on Chloe. “All that stuff online about Velocity Magazine lately-you’re behind it, aren’t you? You reported Jasper Clarke, your own editor-in-chief.”
Chloe sensed something was off but maintained her smile. “Yes.”

industry-a little digging would reveal everything anyway.
The woman clearly hadn’t expected Chloe to admit it so directly. She frowned and leaned toward the HR rep, whispering something that sounded like a complaint-probably about why they’d even brought in such a troublemaker.
The HR rep looked uncomfortable, started to respond, then thought better of it. “Let’s talk outside,” she muttered, and the two of them left the room.
The remaining two interviewers continued, asking Chloe questions about her work experience.
Having worked in the industry for several years, these questions were routine for her.
The interviewers could see her compètence, and smiles began
to appear on their faces—until they remembered the online controversy, leaving them uncertain.
No company wanted to hire a troublemaker.
“Ms. Shaw, why did you choose such a public way to call out your supervisor?”
The interviewer looked genuinely curious.

decided to speak up and demand accountability. It’s part of my integrity as a journalist, and it aligns with my personal values.”
Fairness. That’s all she’d ever asked for-at work, at home,
anywhere.
When Chloe first learned she was the Crawford family’s real daughter, she didn’t expect her parents to choose her over Jane. How could they? They’d raised Jane for eighteen years while Chloe had been a stranger.
All she wanted was equal treatment. Unfortunately, “hope” remained just that-hope.
The man was moved by her words. After a moment of contemplation, he said, “But in reality, a lot of things aren’t fair.”
“That’s the whole point. Someone has to be first. If I stand up now, maybe others will feel like they can too.”
