Shayne came and went like a passing gust of wind.
Just as the weather of North City was turning cold, Joy and Shayne became incredibly intimate with each other. However, just two days later, Joy found herself extremely bored.
Joy was not frustrated at all. After all, a man like Shayne was nothing more than a high-class playboy in her eyes. With his criminally-handsome face and impeccable body, he would be able to attract the affection of many women even if he were penniless.
Moreover, he was rich and incredibly so.
The school went on a three-day break for Thanksgiving. Joy did not have anywhere to go and did not want to travel on public holidays.
Cindy was afraid that she might be lonely and invited her for dinner.
Joy was very close to Cindy, and Cindy's parents had met Joy before. They knew from Cindy about Joy's status in the Jacob family house and had taken pity on her. They encouraged Cindy to bring Joy home for dinner often.
Joy was about to, but her plans were upended by a phone call from the hospital right before she left her house.
"Hello, this is the hospital calling. Are you Joy, the granddaughter of Madam Heather Yard?"
Joy's heart skipped a beat. "Yes, I am. What happened to my grandmother?"
"A tumor ruptured in her brain and she's undergoing emergency surgery in the hospital. You should come quick…"
Joy grabbed her handbag, dashed out of the house, and took a cab to the hospital.
Heather was in the emergency room. Standing outside the operating theater were several people from her village. One of them was a respected elderly man whom Joy knew since she was young. She called him Grandpa Wayne.
"How is my grandma, Grandpa Wayne?" Joy asked anxiously.
"Your grandma is undergoing emergency surgery inside, Joy. I signed the letter of consent earlier. You should sign it too," Zack Wayne said.
"Alright, Grandpa Wayne. Why did Grandma suddenly… I never heard that she had a brain tumor before this."
"Your grandma didn’t know either. She was doing her laundry when the tumor ruptured and could not speak a word even though her mouth was wide open. Fortunately, my son is back home for Thanksgiving so we drove her to the hospital. The hospital in town said that they didn't have the resources to admit her."
Joy felt a cold wave sweeping over her from head to toe. She just stood there. Her limbs felt numb.
She did not dare to cry. "What did the doctor say?" She forced herself to remain composed.
"Don't worry, Joy. One of the doctors in this hospital is my son's friend. Once your grandma is sent here and they've confirmed the presence of a brain tumor, my son immediately requested his friend to contact a specialist. He's performing surgery on your grandma now. Your grandma is a blessed woman; she'll be fine, don't worry."
Tears welled in Joy's eyes as she looked at Grandpa Wayne gratefully. "Thank you, Grandpa Wayne."
Soon, Bryce Wayne, Zack's son, came from the billing department.
"How much is it, Uncle Bryce? I'll transfer the money to you," Joy asked.
Bryce was childhood friends with Quincy, Joy's mother.
"I'm best friends with your mom. You don't have to be so formal, Joy," he said.
Joy did not insist on it. She planned to discuss the payment with him in a few days. "I'll pay you back in a few days, Uncle Bryce."
"There's no rush. Why did you come to the hospital yourself? Where's your father?"
Joy gritted his teeth when Winson Jacob was mentioned. Anger and resentment burned in her eyes. "Grandpa Wayne, Uncle Bryce, I've already broken all ties with the Jacob family. My surname is now Yanny and not Jacob."
"Wha… What's going on? Did your stepmother and stepsister bully you?"
Joy shook her head and refused to discuss them any further. "Grandpa Wayne, Uncle Bryce, thank you so much. If not for you, grandma might…"
