Verian explained frankly to Serene, “Heaton has a cousin sister. She’s Second Uncle’s daughter. His cousin sister seems to have clung onto him since young and admires him a lot too. However, this cousin sister appears to have enmity toward me.”
“Did you somehow provoke her unintentionally?”
Verian thought of it for quite awhile and could not figure out if she ever provoked Jane Fudd. “‘I’ve only interacted with her once or twice. However, I was always treated coldly and she particularly did not make me feel welcome at all. Although I won’t be meeting her frequently in the future, I always feel that as Heaton’s wife, it’s better to have a good relationship with his relatives.”
“That’s true. However, judging from what you’ve said earlier, I feel that marriage is such a hassle. I don’t wish to get married anymore.”
Verian stared at the phone screen and burst into laughter. “Are you really not planning to get married? Your mom didn’t rush you on that?”
“Uh-oh, don’t mention that. My mom just gave me a call, wanting me to bring Chainer home to have a meal together with her. However, I’ve broken up with Chainer and I don’t know how to explain it to my mom. My mom will definitely blame me for not being good enough. It’s so annoying.”
The first thing Verian had in mind was Wilson. Strangely, it was as if Wilson had something to do with Serene. She would always relate to Wilson when she thought of Serene.
“Why not… you ask Wilson to go back home with you? If your mom were to meet Wilson, she might get thrilled and forget about the matter between you and Chainer.”
“Oh damn… I must have thought that I’ve lived my life too long if I were to bring Wilson home. Forget about it. I don’t want to bring trouble upon myself.”
Verian chatted with Serene sporadically and soon after, she laid down on her soft pillow and fell asleep in a daze.
She did not know how long she was asleep for, but the moment she felt someone taking away the phone in her hands, she woke up with a start. Opening her eyes abruptly, she saw Heaton’s fuzzy figure in front of her.
Heaton gently lectured her while covering her with a blanket, “Why do you always sleep with your phone in your hands?”
Variant adjusted herself into a comfortable position and murmured in a husky voice, “I fell asleep while talking to Serene. Did you just come home?”
“Yes.”
“How’s Second Uncle? Is he awake?”
Heaton answered impassively, “He’s awake and the doctors said he’s fine.”
Verian nodded. She was a little sleepy but she could not go back to sleep again anymore. She yawned while asking, “What’s the time now?”
“It’s almost ten.”
As Heaton bent down and leaned toward her, she seized this opportunity to stretch her arms and wrap them around his neck. “Did you accompany Jane all this while?”
Heaton was slightly startled. He smiled and stared at the red mark on her cheeks caused by her sleeping. He then pinched her cheeks. “Are you jealous?”
Verian buried herself in his embrace and muffled, “I don’t know if I’m overthinking it but I’ve always felt that Jane has special feelings toward you. It seems like she always felt that I’ll snatch you away from her.”
There was a hint of grievance in her words.
Heaton hugged her tightly and kissed her on her temple. “Don’t bother about her.”
Verian’s mouth quirked into a smile.
The woman Heaton loved most dearly was still his wife all along.
She then laid on his chest. “Let’s go to the hospital and visit Second Uncle tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
…
The next day, Verian made a stewed crucian carp soup and went to the hospital together with Heaton to visit James.
Both Sarah and Jane were also in the hospital.
Heaton and Verian entered the ward together and James' gaze fell onto them. He then smiled. “Heaton! Verian! Both of you are here.”
Heaton asked, “Second Uncle, we’re here to visit you. How are you feeling today?”
“I feel fine already.”
Heaton placed the thermos he was holding onto the cabinet by the bed and asked, “Second Uncle, here is some crucian carp soup Riana prepared this morning. Do you want to drink it while it’s still hot?”
