Recently, Little Jelly Bean have been heading straight back to the Shallow Bay Mansion. The family of three would then take a trip to the amusement park or the zoo after school.
John called her on the third day to inform her that her visas to Florence had been approved and she could depart tomorrow.
Although Verian was already mentally prepared for that, she still felt helpless.
She did not expect the visas would be processed that quickly.
“But… What if Heaton comes looking for me after I leave? What do I do?”
“You don’t need to worry about that. I will distract him after work tomorrow. When he discovers that you’re no longer home, you should already be in Florence.”
…
Verian stood in front of a world map after the phone call ended. She was staring at the tightly packed cities and countries.
She spent a long time looking before she finally found the average sized city of Florence in Italy.
The time zone difference between Italy and her country was around seven hours. This meant that when Heaton woke up in the morning for work, she would be in a city that was still asleep.
Verian was terrible at math but she took out a pencil, a ruler and wrote down many things in her notebook.
‘The distance between North City to Florence should be around 10 thousand kilometers. It would take about thirteen hours by flight. That flight will go around the Northern Hemisphere once.’
However, it will not be that bad because at least, she would still be sharing the same season as Heaton.
The only thing was, she was told that winter in Florence would be extremely cold and the rainfall was quite frequent. The weather would be cold and wet. Sometimes, the temperature would reach several degrees below zero. As cold as North City was, the temperature would never drop below minus five degrees. Florence was described as beautiful in Hamilton’s poems. He even nicknamed the city in his poem as ‘Firenze’
However, she was not drawn to that name somehow because ‘Firenze’ sounded really cold to her. There was not a hint of warmth in that nickname at all.
She actually found a book titled, ‘Firenze’s Twilight’ in Heaton’s huge study. She sat on the thick carpet while cradling onto that book for a really long time as if she wanted to tempt herself with a sense of direction toward the city she would soon go. However, no matter how hard she tried to admire the city, she could not muster any emotions toward this foreign city with a poetic name.
She laid on the carpet while clutching a mechanical pencil in her hand as she thought about just how far and cold Florence was and how she could possibly go through a winter like that on her own.
…
Verian took a really long nap on the carpet but she was soon woken up by engine sounds coming from the courtyard.
She quickly kept those papers and pens in between a row of uninteresting books.
She was already downstairs when Heaton entered.
Verian took his coat from him but did not immediately hang it on the coat hanger. Instead, she said, “I didn’t make dinner so why don’t we eat out tonight? Besides, I want you to take me somewhere.”
Heaton was also in a good mood as he said while squinting his eyes at her, “You sure are in a good mood to the point you’re willing to eat out when it’s so cold outside.”
“I always wanted to visit Sea World when I was still in school back then but my dad had always been busy. Although he promised to take me there, he never followed through. He passed away soon after and so, I never exactly got to visit. In the twenty plus years of my life, I never went to Sea World so I want to go there with you.”
Heaton found it funny listening to her tone of her statement. He said, “Why do I get the feeling that you’re blaming me for treating you poorly from the tone of your voice? You haven’t visited Sea World in the twenty plus years of your life but even in the thirty plus years of my life, I haven’t been to Sea World before.”
Verian was a little shocked as she said, “You never brought Little Jelly Bean to Sea World before?”
“Nope. The old man brought her there once but she was unwilling to go after that. She was afraid of sharks, whales and those huge creatures. Hence, I never brought her to any aquariums after that.”
Verian smiled and said, “Let’s go tonight then!”
“Oh, that’s a simple request. If Madam Fudd wants to go to Sea World then let’s go!”
Heaton grabbed his coat, led her out the door without even changing his shoes.
“Hey… wait, hold up. I haven’t changed yet.”
Heaton looked at the time and said, “Go ahead and change. I’ll wait for you here.”
