Kush asked, “Boss, pardon my bluntness but, the relationship you share… with madam, well, are you really not afraid that the entire world will go against or even destroy both of you after you brought her back?”
“What if the entire world is against us? I’m not married to Riana just because I need someone else’s approval. Not to mention I have never gone against the entire world before so there’s no harm trying.”
Heaton’s statement sounded calm and simple. However, Kush could tell how serious and determined Heaton actually was.
Kush chuckled as he watched the beautiful explosive fireworks illuminating the night sky. He said, “Boss, you truly reflect a boss’ attitude. You are different from the norm.”
“You won’t get a pay raise this year for buttering up to me.”
Kush chuckled as he said, “Giving me a heavier year-end bonus still works fine.”
Heaton smiled as he took a long drag from his cigarette while squinting his dark eyes before taking a few more puffs.
Heaton already extinguished the cigarette in his hand when Little Jelly Bean ran over. He tossed the cigarette into the bushes before carrying Little Jelly Bean in his arms.
Heaton told Kush, “Alright now, it’s time for you to head home for a good sleep.”
Kush stared at Heaton’s back as he carried Little Jelly Bean back into the house. He said, “Happy new year, boss.”
…
Little Jelly Bean slept with Heaton that night.
It was already one in the morning before they went to bed.
Little Jelly Bean looked at the time displayed on the phone. She blinked her huge eyes before burying herself into Heaton. She mumbled in an exhausted tone, “Happy New Year, daddy.”
Heaton’s cold empty heart was significantly warmed as he lowered his head to kiss the little rascal’s forehead while saying, “Happy New Year, Jelly Bean.”
Heaton recalled the past three years of Verian’s absence. He spent every new year’s eve and new year’s day with Little Jelly Bean like that. He never once felt lonely or sad. However, after a person was so used to being in the company with another and when the other party suddenly left one’s life. The emptiness and loneliness would slowly manifest itself.
Little Jelly Bean buried herself in him as she asked childishly, “Daddy, do you miss Monty?”
Heaton replied calmly, “Yeah.” It was unsure if he was actually listening.
Little Jelly Bean said, “I miss Monty too.”
Yet again, Heaton casually replied, “Yeah.”
Little Jelly Bean asked again, “Daddy, will Monty come home?”
Heaton was stunned for a second before suddenly staring at Little Jelly Bean with a confident gaze. He muttered four words through his thin lips, “She will. Real soon.”
It was only then did Little Jelly Bean close her eyes after feeling reassured. She said, “I have nothing to worry about then. The strawberry cake Madam Leah made tastes awful. I still prefer the one Monty makes.”
Little Jelly Bean was mumbling a lot to herself as Heaton casually responded to her without much attention.
In the end, Little Jelly Bean drooled while talking in her sleep.
“Daddy, I want to eat KFC…”
“I’ll bring you there tomorrow.”
“Daddy, I want to see Monty tomorrow.”
Heaton gently patted his daughter’s back with his huge hand. He seemed to be replying to the little rascal but also seemed to be talking to himself at the same time. He said, “Daddy will find Monty real soon.”
…
Heaton could not sleep that night.
The surrounding area was not an urban district but instead was a high-end district for villas. Hence, fireworks were going off nearby and no one else seemed to be bothered by it. Waves of fireworks continued even after three in the morning to welcome the new year.
Little Jelly Bean was sound asleep in his arms. As long as the child was able to sleep, it did not matter how loud the outside commotion was.
Heaton was wide awake. He was awake enough to be thinking about Verian.
He never knew how strong the feeling would be when he missed someone. It was strong enough that even his insomnia did not feel awful.
…
It was currently 9 p.m. in Florence being a world apart.
Verian had been cooped up in her hotel room for two days. However, since today happened to be New Year’s Eve, she was quite interested to see how Itallians would spend their day.
Hence, she left the hotel alone that night.
However, she soon regretted going outside when she walked to the main street.
