Passionate Devotion: Master Fudd's Beloved Wife novel Chapter 382

Lain made an excuse to leave not long after dinner.

"I still have an appointment with a patient at my clinic. I'll be off now."

Verian stood up and smiled at her. She said, "Well, Dr. Heidy, we won't keep you then. I know you're always busy, so there's no need to drop by our home unnecessarily."

No need to drop by unnecessarily…

Lain was stunned when she heard those words.

There was a subtle change in her expression. She was usually calm, but it seemed like she had lost control when Verian provoked her.

Heaton followed Lain when she walked out of the mansion.

Verian noticed that they had a conversation when she looked at them through the huge glass window.

Lain looked bitter, but Heaton was extremely calm. It did not look like it was a happy conversation.

In the courtyard.

Heaton said, "Don't show up in front of Riana again. She doesn't like you."

Lain's eyes teared as she stared at Heaton with a mocking gaze. She said, "I can't ever appear in front of her just because she doesn't like me? I'm your friend, Heaton. Have you forgotten who stayed by your side when you were depressed?"

She had sacrificed so much for him, much more than Verian ever did. How did that woman manage to snatch Heaton away from her without so much of an effort?

Heaton remained cold and calm. He said, "I treated you as a friend, and yet you did all those things to tear me away from my wife? Is that how a friend should behave, Lain?"

"Heaton… what do you mean?"

"Weren't you the one who tampered with my uncle's and Verian's paternity report?"

Lain's heart pounded as she asked, "You knew about that?"

"Lain, you're too much of a schemer."

Schemer? What right did Heaton have to call someone a schemer?

Lain scoffed. "I'm a schemer? Was it my fault if I had to do all I could to win you back? Do all men adore naïve and innocent women like Verian? Sure, she may be nice and innocent and doesn't scheme against anyone. But all she knows is to flirt and cry. I thought you're different from other men, Heaton. But why would you fall for a girl like her too?"

Heaton frowned. He did not expect Lain's hatred for Verian would run so deep. He said, "Lain, you're too intimidating for some people."

"Is that all? I've always wanted to know; how could Verian be comparable to me? Tell me honestly, not just one of your excuses."

Lain clutched her palms tightly as she stared at Heaton.

After a long pause, Heaton finally spoke in a calm tone, "I don't like strong women."

Lain was speechless.

She had considered all kinds of excuses from Heaton, but she did not expect it to be such a simple one.

He disliked strong women…

"But I can be weak around you, Heaton. You've never tried to understand me, so who gives you the right to dismiss me just like that?"

Heaton's dark gaze deepened as he said, "Perhaps I'm only willing to allow Verian the chance to enter my life. Maybe that's the only reason you need."

Heaton turned around to make a phone call.

Verian received the call in the living room while she was with Little Jelly Bean. She told the child, "Jelly Bean, I'm going outside to help your dad with something. Play by yourself for a little while."

"Alright, Monty, hurry up then. Make sure that Daddy doesn't fall."

Verian tossed her phone aside, headed into the courtyard, and walked to Heaton's side. She glanced at Lain, who was still standing on the same spot.

"Dr. Heidy, don't you have a patient to attend to?"

Lain clutched her car keys as she bit on her lips. Then she strode to her car in her high heels.
