Verian sat on the couch with Old Master Fudd as they watched the news.
Italy was in complete chaos. The masked terrorists had blown up a building while they pointed a gun at the crowd. It was truly a chaotic scene!
Verian tried to call Heaton while they watched the news. However, none of her calls could reach him!
Old Master Fudd frantically asked, "Did you manage to call him?"
Verian's face was pale when she shook her head and said, "No."
The old man clutched his walking stick. "I have to send someone to Italy to search for Heaton immediately. He can't see a thing, and if anything were to happen…"
"Dad, please calm down."
Even though Verian tried to comfort the old man, her heart was in a completely panicked mess.
She had a hard time sleeping that night.
She called Kush several times while she was in bed but to no avail.
Her phone suddenly rang. She picked up the call even before she could see the caller's I.D.
"Heaton?"
"Verian, it's me, Serene."
Her heart immediately sank. She asked, "Serene?"
"Hey... I can't seem to reach Wilson… Did your husband stay in contact with him?"
Verian raised her eyebrows and said, "Wilson hasn't returned from Italy?"
"No. Could you ask President Fudd for me?"
"But Heaton went to Italy too. It's very chaotic there now. There's a terrorist attack earlier today, and I can't reach Heaton either."
"I am very worried about him. He can't see anything now, and if he were to run into those terrorists, it would be extremely dangerous for him."
"Don't panic, Verian. Do you know which city he is in?"
"He should be in Rome. When we had our video call last night, he said that he would be departing to Rome the next day, but I'm not sure if he had actually gone there or not."
Serene made a bold suggestion. "I am done with my thesis. Verian, why don't we look for them in Rome!"
…
Verian had studied in France, and she had the habit of renewing her Europe Visa whenever she could. Serene had also made plans to go on a vacation in Europe after her graduation, so she had her visas too. They booked the earliest flight to Rome for the following day.
Old Master Fudd was firmly against her decision when he heard about it. "Italy is in chaos right now. What do I tell Heaton if anything were to happen to you in Rome? And you're pregnant now. I can't allow you to go!"
"Dad, I will take good care of myself, and besides, didn't you send people to go with us as well?"
"Verian, you…"
"Dad, I will take good care of myself and the baby, so don't worry. I will be even more on edge at home, and it would greatly affect my emotions, which would affect my child too, right?"
Old Master Fudd could not argue with her, so he waved his hands, sighed, and allowed her to go to Rome.
However, he gave orders to those men who would be accompanying Verian to Italy. "Take good care of Madam. If she loses even a single strand of hair, don't expect you'd be able to return home!"
"Yes, sir!"
…
After more than ten hours of a long haul flight, Verian and Serene finally arrived in Rome.
After they exited the airport, they saw a lot of rubble and collapsed buildings around them. The cell signal also got poorer.
Serene patted Verian's shoulder and comforted her. "They might have lost contact with us because of the poor cell signal. Don't worry too much."
Verian's mind was a mess throughout the journey. Her heart was cold as she stared at the pitch-black roads.
…
After Verian and Serene had showered, they decided to rest in bed. Then they heard gunshots from outside.
Verian could not sleep as her heart pounded violently.
Serene had fallen asleep, but her phone suddenly rang.
"Serene? Serene? Your phone's ringing, Serene?"
