Helen arrived home as well.
As soon as she arrived home, she changed into her slippers at the hall. Carrying the gift bag right beside her own bag, she crouched down and scanned the room.
Carter and Tyler were in the living room. Carter was working on his laptop while Tyler was playing with lego next to him.
“I’m back.”
Helen stuffed the gift bag into her bucket bag.
Carter lifted his head, walked up to her, and asked, “How was it? Did you get anything while you were out shopping?”
“No, I didn’t find anything interesting.”
Carter knew she would say that. Helen had been very thrifty ever since she had gotten together with him. She never really bought new clothes for herself because she felt it was unnecessary to have so many clothes and that included jewelry and accessories too. At times, Carter wanted her to spend more.
Carter caressed her arms and said, “Are you tired? It’s already 5pm. You should sit down and get some rest while I go make dinner.”
Helen was stunned and pulled his arms. “I’m not tired, I’ll go make dinner.”
Carter touched her head and smiled faintly. “I thought I already told you I’d be making dinner for you tonight?”
“Are you really a man of his words?”
She thought he was just joking about making dinner that night. Who knew he had actually meant it?
“Of course.”
Helen did not stop him. They had been married for three years but Carter had never cooked for them before. He only helped her out with small chores like washing the dishes after meals. Their roles were pretty clear. Helen was in charge of cooking and laundry, while Carter would do the dishes and mop the floor. As for their son, Tyler… He would usually clean the toilet.
Helen did not idle away while Carter was cooking. She followed him to the kitchen. Carter rolled up his sleeves and revealed his sturdy forearm while Helen grabbed an apron and tied it around his waist.
“Although you think aprons aren’t cool, please bear with me. It’d be difficult to wash stains off clothes if you dirtied them…”
Carter turned around and stared intently at his wife who was tying his apron with her head hung low. His lips curled upwards as he said, “Alright.”
After putting on the apron, Carter stood by the sink and started washing the vegetables. He was really fast. In the blink of an eye, he was already chopping up the vegetables.
There was nothing Helen could do to help him. “Honey, do you need help?”
She seriously doubted Carter could cook.
Carter instead gave her an order, “The clothes are still on the balcony. You can go bring them in. Don’t mind me.”
“Alright.”
Carter took a look at the time and said, “Dinner will be served in 40 minutes sharp.”
Helen could not help but laugh. “Is my husband so good at cooking?”
“Of course.”
…
After 40 minutes, three dishes and one soup were set on the table.
There on the table was stir-fried shredded potatoes with green peppers, pan fried vegetables, braised shrimps, and seaweed egg drop soup.
A tantalizing aroma filled the air and roused one’s appetite. However…would it really taste good?
Helen and Tyler’s eyes were gleaming as they stared at the food on the table.
Tyler continued to look and said, “Dad, it seems like you can cook better than mum.”
“Taste it.” Carter sounded confident.
Helen and Tyler started eating.
Tyler said excitedly, “Dad, you’re so good at cooking! It’s really delicious!”
Tyler never really liked vegetables but he ate a lot of vegetables that night.
Helen complimented him while eating, “Honey, they taste really good! They’re even much better than mine!”
Carter was excited listening to his wife and son praising him.
“So, what do I get in return?”
Helen said, “Honey, since you’re so good at cooking, why don’t you take charge of our meals in the future?”
