The helicopter descended, and a well-built man dressed in a combat suit got down from it. Even though it was dark, Serene could see the man's face under the moonlight.
'It's Wilson… He's here to save me…'
Once Wilson got out of the helicopter, countless hidden snipers aimed their guns at him; one could see many red laser dots on his head and body.
Serene trembled. She reflexively turned to look at the woods around her. The trees and foliage were dense; it was the perfect spot for an ambush.
The trap had already been set; Wilson would not make it out alive.
Dark Shadow stood some distance away, and he pointed a gun at Wilson's head. "Drop your weapons!" he commanded.
Wilson tossed the guns and ammunition and lifted his hands. "I didn't expect you'd be afraid of me. I'm by lonesome self, and yet you've prepared so many people to fight me," he mocked.
Wilson glanced at his surroundings.
"Enough with the word games, White Wolf. Where's the thing I wanted? Hand it over!"
Serene was afraid that Wilson might be tricked, so she immediately yelled. "Go away! He wants you dead! He's not going to spare you even if you hand it to him!"
Dark Shadow's hand grasped the back of Serene's collar firmly as he glared at her. "Shut up!"
Wilson's gaze brimmed with icy hostility. "I dare you to lay another finger on her!" He spat out each word. "If you harm her in any way, you will not get the map to the South American trade routes or the contract, even if I'm dead!"
"Just go, Wilson! Don't worry about me!"
The man's sharp gaze fell on Serene's grimy face. "If I leave, who will save you?"
"I'm only your ex-girlfriend! There's nothing between us anymore!"
Wilson chuckled. "You're still my girlfriend. I won't abandon you," he said confidently.
Tears welled in Serene's eyes as she looked into Wilson's profound gaze.
If they survived the ordeal, she would ask him why he left her.
If his affection for her was merely temporary gratification, then why would he risk his life to save her?
"Believe me. We'll leave this place alive."
Serene looked at him and nodded; she believed in him.
Dark Shadow got more impatient as he listened to the two love birds' conversation. "You're about to die, and you still have the mood to romance each other? I don't have time for this, White Wolf. Hand me the trade routes and contract, and I'll let you and the girl die with dignity!"
Wilson did not give him the items. "Let her go, and I'll give them to you!"
"You're not in the position to bargain with me!"
Dark Shadow did not expect Wilson to survive the ambush. Even if he released Serene, she would only be a burden to him.
When he noticed the difference in their strengths, Dark Shadow was confident that he could get what he wanted and, at the same time, eliminated White Wolf.
Dark Shadow shoved Serene, and she fell into Wilson's arms.
Wilson hugged her. "Are you hurt?"
Serene cried out in relief when she was in Wilson's embrace. She shook her head as she smiled. "I'm fine."
Dark Shadow cocked the gun and aimed it at them. "Hand me the things now, White Wolf!"
Wilson pulled the woman behind him. "Alright, I'll give you the trade routes!"
Wilson stuck a hand into his combat suit pocket, pulled out a silver pistol, and aimed it at Dark Shadow!
"How dare you make a fool out of me, White Wolf? You want to die in pieces?!"
