Serene could eat a lot because she had a good appetite and low blood sugar.
Wilson bought two steamed buns for her, but Serene caressed her stomach a little awkwardly after she ate them. "I'm still hungry."
He knew that would happen.
Wilson tried to bring Serene some 'dim sum' and millet porridge after he finished his breakfast, but the lunch lady caught him and stopped him.
The lunch lady at Minsk Base was a weirdo. She was not afraid of Wilson, and she did not like to waste food.
Even though it was a commendable habit, she should not let people starve.
The lunch lady gave Wilson a strange look as she asked, "I thought you'd had your breakfast? Why are you packing so much food?"
Wilson answered her honestly, "These are for my girlfriend."
The lunch lady's gaze grew even weirder. "When did you get a girlfriend? I didn't know you fell in love with someone. Ruby had been chasing after you for years, but you've never liked her, and she's a pretty one, too. Is your girlfriend prettier than Ruby?"
Wilson was dumbfounded for a moment, and a slight frown crept across his face.
"Even if you do have a girlfriend, can she finish the amount of food you got for her? Girls don't eat much. I'm sure the food will go to waste."
Wilson continued to be speechless.
Frustrated, he put down the food he took and picked up two steamed buns instead. "Is it alright if I take two steamed buns then?"
"Take it."
...
In the end, Wilson brought Serene to the canteen.
The lunch lady looked at Serene, who stood next to Wilson, in astonishment. Serene clung onto Wilson's arm as she pointed toward the food in the display fridge.
"Aret, is this really your girlfriend?"
Serene felt embarrassed; she was the center of attention again. Her grip on Wilson's arm tightened, and she lifted her head to look at the side of his face.
Wilson nodded calmly; he had acknowledged their relationship to an outsider.
Wilson put his arms around Serene's shoulder and said to the lunch lady, "Technically, she's my fiancée."
Serene blushed, but she could not hide the smile behind her beady eyes.
The lunch lady mumbled, "Ruby is prettier, though."
Serene was speechless.
Those words struck her hard!
As Wilson took Serene's plate of food from the lunch lady, she exclaimed, "She eats so much, and yet she's so skinny. I've never seen a girl like her who doesn't gain weight even though she eats a lot."
Serene was left speechless once again.
Wilson brought Serene to the table. Serene puffed her cheeks as she ate her breakfast.
Serene suddenly spoke halfway through her meal, "I'm full. Let's go."
Wilson looked at the leftover food on her plate. "Are you really full? You can usually eat more than that."
Serene said, "So, you too think it's hard to take care of me because I eat a lot?"
Wilson laughed when he saw the woman's aggrieved expression. "I'd never think that. I love girls who can eat a lot."
Serene smiled; her eyes were like small crescent moons. "Really?"
Wilson carressed her head as he dotingly said, "Finish your food. No one will say anything about you eating a lot."
Serene listened to Wilson like an obedient kitten and gulped her bowl of millet porridge.
After she was done, Wilson pointed at the rice grain on the corner of her mouth, a signal for her to wipe it off. However, she could not see her face without a mirror. She tried to wipe it off but failed; she could not find the rice grain.
Wilson reached out to her and gently wiped the grain off the corner of her lips with his fingertip.
They looked so intimate with each other; Wilson doted on her.
Passersby would stop in their tracks and stare at them for a brief moment.
Joan and Ruby were at the canteen to have their breakfast as well. Joan nudged her friend. "Look over there."
