Serene's pent-up grievances and anger exploded all at once.
"Why do you always tell me this stuff just before you leave? I know that you have to keep your job confidential and aren’t even allowed to talk to me about it. However, you said that I'm your family. Is your family not allowed to know your whereabouts?"
"Baby, I just received the news this morning and before that..."
Serene cut Wilson off before he could finish talking. She lifted her head and looked at Wilson with bloodshot eyes. "Then tell me where you’re going to be this time? Is it a desert or a jungle? How long will you be away? Will we be unable to contact each other until you come back?"
Wilson pursed his lips and said, "I...can't answer your questions."
There was no reason in letting her know his whereabouts as it might put her in danger instead.
Serene bit her lips. "How long do I have to wait for you this time? One week, ten days, or half a month? Perhaps a month or half a year? Wilson, I know it's very selfish for me to behave this way. However, I feel extremely insecure right now. I don't know where you're going or how long you’ll be away. All I can do is wait for you. However, I don't know how long I can hang in there… When can you start staying by my side without having to leave all the time?"
Wilson could not answer her question.
He could only apologize to her in regards to all of this. He had nothing else to say.
He lifted his hands to wipe away her tears but she pushed his hand away. Serene then dashed into the bedroom and locked herself inside.
She leaned against the door and covered her face.
She was unsure why she had lost her temper with him tonight. She did not want that to happen but it seemed like she could no longer hold back her pent-up anger. She wanted to be a good girlfriend who could bid him farewell with a smile on her face, give him a hug, and wait obediently for him to come back.
However, Serene realized she was not as easy-going as she had thought she was, neither was she generous either.
She wanted them to be together every day. She wanted to wake up with him by her side so she could say good morning to him, and she wanted to say good night to him before they went to bed.
No girl could bear their boyfriends disappearing all of a sudden. Moreover, there was no way she would be able to reach him during this period. All she could do was wait, unable to rule out the possibility of him not coming back at all.
She wanted to hug him and tell him, ‘Wilson, I’m pregnant, can you please not leave?’
However, she knew she could not stop him.
Serene sat by the door for quite some time and was starting to feel emotionally exhausted.
She thought that Wilson had decided to not bother consoling her and was sleeping on the sofa. However, she heard a deep hoarse voice came from outside the door moments later.
“Serene, it’s my fault for keeping you waiting all this while. However, I have no idea when I will be back this time as well...”
Wilson laughed at himself after saying that. “I know that nothing will change no matter what I say and you don’t like hearing these words either so I’ll just stop here. Since we’re not married yet, I’ll let you decide whether you want to continue our relationship. I’ll respect any choice you make.”
Serene trembled.
She was furious yet had no reason to feel that way.
“Is that dangerous job of yours more important than me? Is it worth more than your own life?”
Wilson stood outside and stared at the door with a sad gaze as he said, “I wouldn’t have signed the contract if I had known that I would meet you. However, I sold myself to the organization and can’t breach the contract. I will accept any decision you make for the time being, even if you want to break up with me. I can only quit after the contract ends and chase after you again once I stop killing so we can live together in a safe and secure environment.”
Serene sniffled as her eyes clouded with tears. “Have you ever thought that I might already be married to another guy by then?”
“No.”
“Are you that confident I won’t marry another guy?”
Wilson laughed at himself. “No, it’s not that I’m confident you won’t marry another guy. It’s simply because I dread to imagine the image of you with another guy.”
Serene buried her face into her knees. Right when Wilson thought she was done talking to him, her sobs could be heard coming from inside the room.
“I’m sorry… Wilson, I don’t mean to lash out at you. I just couldn’t resist myself all of a sudden. I don’t want… I don’t want to let you go.”
“I know. I don’t blame you. It’s my fault.”
Serene choked up. “Am I being too immature? I know that I’m not as matured as Ruby. Not only would she not throw a tantrum, but she’d also support your job as well. Unlike me, I yelled at you and am against it. I’m just getting in your way. Wilson, are you sick of me as well? I should’ve known better, I’m sorry…”
The corner of Wilson’s lips curled upwards slightly. “You’ll make me feel bad if you’re too considerate of me.”
Serene opened the bedroom door.
She stood there with her head hung low like a child who had done something wrong. Holding onto her grievance, she said, “I’ll never throw my temper at you again. However, you’re not allowed to talk about breaking up with me in the future.”
She spoke in a very soft and timid voice but Wilson had heard her clearly.
She timidly reached out her fair and tiny hands to grab onto his sleeves. Then, she gently tugged on them as though she was trying to make up with him.
Wilson pulled her into his embrace and held her head with his huge hands. He pressed a kiss on her forehead and said solemnly in his hoarse voice, “Alright.”
Serene hugged him tightly, lifted her head, and said, “I have something very important to tell you after you come back safely.”
“Why don’t you tell me now since it’s important?”
“It’s a secret.”
