While Wilson had a conversation with Ruby through the phone, he was watching everything the woman in the room did from a distance nearby.
When he turned around for a second, he missed what Serene did since when he noticed at the very next second, Serene was already standing on a chair trying to reach for something high.
Wilson frowned and immediately strode inside, threw his phone aside without hanging up the call, and carried Serene off the chair with a single arm.
“What are you doing? Aren’t you afraid of slipping by doing that?”
“I’m looking for a book.”
“Which one? I’ll get it for you.”
Serene pointed at the only book that had gotten her interest on the shelf and said, “That comic.”
Since Wilson was tall, he did not need to stand on a stool to reach for it. He took the comic and handed it to her while saying, “I already told Ruby to come over tomorrow to keep you company. Since I’m not going to be around these days, you can have Ruby reach for things and cook for you. Your body hasn’t exactly recovered yet, so it’d be bad if you slipped.”
Ruby’s loud, furious voice could be heard coming from the phone the instant he said that…
“Wilson, you b*stard! Why don’t you go ahead and die already!”
Wilson closed his eyes and rubbed his ears.
It seemed he had made the mistake of forgetting to hang up.
When Wilson grabbed his phone and was about to hang up, Ruby’s furious and stern voice chimed in for the very last time.
“I’m telling you, Wilson Jarret, I won’t show up to take care of Serene tomorrow! You can think of a solution yourself!”
“Beep…”
Ruby had hung up.
The corners of Serene’s mouth twitched as she said, “...Wilson, it’s not nice for us to trouble someone else like that!”
“Don’t worry, she’ll show up.”
“But I have a pair of arms and legs. I don’t actually need Ruby to come over to take care of me, you know.”
In all honesty, Wilson was not worried about her slipping at home. He wanted Ruby to come over just to keep her safe.
“I still can’t let go of the previous incident of you being kidnapped by Stephen. Babe, you can’t be in harm’s way again.”
Serene asked hesitantly, “But if you have Ruby to come over and take care of me, she’ll feel awful, right? Besides, she had a huge crush on you back then.”
“She has a boyfriend now so you don’t have to feel bad about it. Besides, we’re extremely close friends. We’ve been through so much together and although she’ll complain about something as simple as watching over you, that isn’t how she truly feels in her heart.”
Serene nodded and said, “Ruby sure has quite the foul mouth but it seems her heart is still quite soft.”
“Just hang in there if she actually makes things difficult for you, okay?”
Serene nodded in agreement and replied in a serious tone, “That’s how I feel too since she has a gun with her.”
Wilson chuckled as he raised his hand and gently patted her head. He hugged her and jokingly said, “Just let me know when I return if she’s actually mean to you. I’ll help you get back at her.”
Serene nodded reluctantly as her mind was still focused on Wilson being deployed to a warzone by the borders.
“What’s the matter?”
Serene teared up instantly before hugging his neck and saying, “Wilson, you have to return home safely, okay?”
The man hugged the woman’s slender little waist with his huge hand as he promised her in a sincere tone, “I’ll return home safely.”
Serene wanted to cry but she held back while hugging his neck tightly. She then secretly dried her tears on his shirt.
…
Ruby was already at the door early in the morning. She had on a cold yet beautiful face.
When Serene went to answer the door, she trembled slightly even with a thick coat on!
She was not intimidated by her cold and terrifying expression. Instead, she felt like running away when she noticed Ruby was so casually swinging her gun around in her hands!
Since Ruby seemed like a person who would randomly shoot someone on a whim!
“What’s the matter? Am I not welcome here?”
Serene immediately cracked a reluctantly suspicious smile as she said, “Of course you are. You’re more than welcome here.”
