Passionate Devotion: Master Fudd's Beloved Wife novel Chapter 800

The next morning, Boyle left his home at half-past eight. He rode his bicycle and passed by 14th Street as usual.

At the end of the street, he spotted four gangsters with metal rods standing imposingly as if they had been waiting for his arrival.

“Boyle, our master told us to come and advise you to give up on the case.”

Boyle alighted from his bicycle. He took off his outer coat and hung it on his bicycle. He then pulled up the long sleeves of his white-collared tee. His actions seemed indifferent, but there was a cruel darkness in his eyes. “If you want to fight, please make it quick. I’m in a rush.”

The four gangsters snorted. “Seems like you aren’t heeding to our gentle advice. Let us teach you what it means to be sensible.”

“Brothers, attack!”

The trial would commence at ten o’clock sharp.

At thirty minutes past nine, Jennifer and her father were standing at the court entrance anxiously waiting for Boyle.

Huntley had called Boyle twice but no one answered.

Jennifer’s father was unable to stand still and asked Huntley, “Lawyer Huntley, is Lawyer Boyle not coming?”

Huntley understood his concerns and comforted him, “Uncle, don’t worry. Boyle isn’t a timid person. He would not have stage fright even if the defendant was an infamous person for breaking the law. He’s probably stuck in the peak-hour traffic.”

Huntley did not even believe his own words. Boyle was not driving, so traffic jams would definitely not hinder him from arriving at court.

However, Boyle was a very punctual person. It was such an important case and the trial was starting at ten. He would usually have reached way early before the court proceedings even started.

It was a complete mess at 14th Street.

Boyle was lying on the floor. He clenched his teeth through the sharp pain and supported himself on the floor with his arms before standing up.

He had been stabbed in his lower right abdomen. The wound was bleeding profusely and had tainted his shirt sleeves.

Those gangsters had run away after lodging a knife into him as they were afraid to be seen by passersby.

There were no surveillance cameras in the area.

Boyle applied some pressure on the wound with one hand as he staggered out from the secluded street.

He lifted his other hand and glanced at his wristwatch. It was a quarter to ten. He could not file a police report nor call the ambulance. He had important things to do.

Boyle’s lower right abdomen was covered with blood and the blood dripped past his fingers. The sight was frightening and passersby along the road were unable to ignore him. A few of them approached him and asked in concern.

“Mister, do you need me to send you to the hospital?”

“Send me to court, please. Thank you.”

There were 10 minutes left from the commencement of court proceedings. The relevant personnel had already entered the room to get ready for the trial.

Huntley bumped into the defendant’s family and lawyer at the entrance.

The defendant donned a proud look on his face. “Lawyer Boyle who’s exceptionally good in defending his plaintiff is absent today? I didn’t expect him to raise the white flag so soon.”

With an insincere smile on his face, Huntley stared at him and muttered in a soft voice that only both of them could hear, “If Boyle’s tardiness is due to your shady acts behind our back, be prepared to receive summons from the Court. Don’t forget, as a lawyer, we’re definitely capable of doing something like that.”

The defendant snorted and gave Huntley a death stare before entering the court.

Huntley glanced at the time. The trial was commencing soon. They would be unable to make it if they continued waiting for Boyle at the entrance. Because of that, he told Jennifer and her father, “Let’s head in first.”

Jennifer’s father worriedly asked, “When is Lawyer Boyle coming?”

Huntley’s eyes gleamed determinedly. “I believe Boyle will arrive on time.”

“What should we do if he’s unable to make it?”

“If Boyle is absent, I shall represent you all on his behalf. I’m one of your appointed lawyers as well.”

However, the arguments and the evidence were all with Boyle. Huntley did not have full confidence in winning the case by himself.

If Boyle represented the case, they would surely win the case and sentence the defendant to more than ten years of jail time.
