Cherie could not sleep. Lying in bed, she clutched her quilt and looked around the room from time to time. At times, she looked at Boyle who had his eyes shut, unsure if he was sleeping or not. At times, she stared at the night outside the window.
She kept tossing and turning around.
Boyle frowned slightly. He opened his eyes to look at her as he pulled her into his embrace and hugged her from the back.
He rested his chin on top of her head as he spoke to her with his deep voice, “Both of us won’t be able to sleep if you don’t fall asleep soon.”
The woman lifted her head without taking his hint. She smiled and said, “Let’s talk then.”
Boyle was speechless.
“What do you want to talk about?”
She pondered for a moment, stared at him and said, “I saw a lot of certificates and trophies in your living room earlier when I was eating dumplings. Boyle, have you always been good at studies since young?”
Boyle answered with a light hum.
Cherie laughed and said, “Then you must be the model student that teachers and parents love the most. Unlike me, I never liked studying since young and I would often skip classes. My dad used to scold me when I was in kindergarten because I always skipped classes. Boyle, why do you like studying? I don’t like it. It’s so troublesome and so tiring.”
Boyle was amused hearing her complaining in her naïve voice, “You still manage to get into Capital City University although you hate studying so much. Are you trying to show off how smart you are?”
“I’m not as smart as you.” She was just an average student.
However, Boyle suddenly said in a serious tone, “I was never the smartest student. I simply worked harder than others because I know that people with my background will have nothing if we don’t work hard.”
Cherie’s heart ached upon hearing his words. She hugged his waist with her tiny hands, lifted her head and looked at him with determined eyes as she said, “You won’t have nothing. You always have me and you’re always the best in my heart.”
Boyle’s heart trembled. His gaze turned soft as he lowered his head to look at her, “Rie, I’m not as good and excellent as you think. You’ll feel tired and you’ll suffer staying with me.”
“But I’m not afraid of being tired or suffering. I’m willing to do anything to stay together with you. Moreover, my dad told me that one will have the chance to skyrocket as long as he or she works hard. Boyle, you shouldn't look down on yourself.”
Boyle caressed her face and hugged her even tighter.
Cherie snuggled into his neck and blinked. She could not help but ask, "Boyle, why do you live only with your mum? Where's your dad?"
Boyle's eyes slightly turned cold at the mention of his father. "We already cut ties with him."
Who would want to be related to a kidnapper?
Boyle and his mother were reviled and despised by the public eight years ago because of Hanson Lawson. His classmates mocked and pranked him. Pressured by the public's failure to understand him, he even wanted to take his own life.
They were forced to move to Chester. Back then, technology was less advanced. Nobody knew them but the fact that nobody knew them made them happy. It was ridiculous.
Cherie was stunned and asked, "Why?"
Boyle remained silent for a few moments.
"You don't have to tell me if you don't feel like doing so. Tell me whenever you're ready."
Right when Cherie thought he would not continue, Boyle suddenly spoke, "He was a kidnapper and went rogue."
He sounded as cold as ice.
