Evelyn was beyond confused. She looked at Brad, who seemed so unfamiliar to her at that moment, and couldn't help but ask, "Why are you defending Nadine? I thought you despised her! Brad, I remember you once said that the person you despise most in this world is Nadine and that you'd never, ever like her.
"Yet, you're standing up for her right now? What gives? Are you going back on your word?"
She knew Brad like the back of her hand. If she confronted him head-on and told him he couldn't defend Nadine, it would only make their relationship even more strained.
That said, she believed that reminding him of his past promises might change his mind. Brad was a man who valued his commitments above all else, after all.
A murderous gleam flickered in Brad's eyes as he cast a harsh, unforgiving glare at Evelyn. That one look was enough to make her break out in a cold sweat. In that split second, she realized just how merciless her son could be. That deadly gaze made her too afraid to meet his eyes.
His eyes narrowed dangerously as he rose to his feet and closed the distance between them. His thin lips parted slightly as he asked coldly, "What's it to you if I changed my mind?
"I know what you've been up to, Mom, but I haven't bothered to say anything. I respect you for raising me all these years and I don't want to make things ugly between us. But you'll be sorry if you keep giving Nadine a hard time."
He was aware of how his mother and younger sister had treated Nadine over the past six years. He had chosen to turn a blind eye because he once hated Nadine.
