It was a regular weekday, and Sean had school as usual. By the time the clock struck 4:10 pm, Nadine wrapped up her shift, flagged down a cab, and headed straight to Sean's kindergarten.
The kids were dismissed at 4:30 pm, but she was running a little behind due to a minor issue. She wondered if the kindergarten teacher would give her a hard time for being late.
Feeling anxious, Nadine arrived at the kindergarten entrance, bracing herself for a potential scolding. But to her surprise, she noticed Brad's car parked as soon as she got there.
The window was rolled down, and both Sean and Brad were sitting in the backseat. Neither of them noticed her arrival and were seemingly deep in a private conversation.
Brad was the first to notice Nadine. He stroked Sean's head and gestured toward her with his chin. The little one looked over and called out sweetly, "Mommy! Why were you late today?"
His mother was usually the one who picked him up. When she didn't show up that day and his father came instead, he thought his mother wasn't coming anymore. As soon as she spotted Nadine, Sean leaned against the car window and waved his tiny hands frantically. "I'm right here, Mommy!"
Nadine's brows knitted when she noticed her son in Brad's car. What was this jerk doing here? Was he trying to take Sean away from her?
She immediately went on high alert, bristling like a porcupine as she stormed over to the car, glaring at Brad fiercely. "What are you doing here? Who gave you permission to pick Sean up?"
